CENDI MEMBERS: I APOLOGIZE FOR THE DUPLICATION

In October 1998, a joint AAAS/UNESCO/ICSU Workshop on Developing Practices
and Standards for Electronic Publishing in Science resulted in a request for
a clearer definition of "scientific publication" in the electronic
environment. At the request of the International Federation of STM
Publishers, a working group was formed, chaired by Mark Frankel of AAAS to
draft such a definition. It is available from the following URL:
http://www.aaas.org/spp/dspp/sfrl/projects/epub/define.htm

The group presents a list of requirements for "all publications" and then
special attributes for those identified as "first publication" and
"definitive publication". They also suggest some relevant metadata that may
be of interest. While much of the emphasis is on electronic journals,
because of the focus of the STM Publishers, there are many aspects that could
be used for other types of electronic materials.

Mark would appreciate your input. He is trying to collect the comments by
mid-December. You can respond with your thoughts directly to Mark at
mfrankel@aaas.org. I would be interested in compiling a synopsis of the
thoughts from ICSTI and CENDI members, so would you please copy me on any
messages to Mark.

Gail
