MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARIAT TO ALL ICSTI MEMBERS
*************************************************

We take pleasure in informing you that ICSTI FORUM no. 35, September 2000,
is now available on the ICSTI web site.

CONTENTS

        Introduction
By Kurt Molholm, Chairman of FORUM Editorial Board

In May, ICSTI's members gathered in Columbus,Ohio, USA for the Year 2000
General Assembly. This issue of Forum provides presentations given at the
discussion session held in conjunction with the conference. On Friday, May
19, 2000, ICSTI members and invited guests discussed the critical subject
of the potential economic impact resulting from the use of the digital
environment on publishing and distribution. The discussion session brought
together leaders in the information industry, some of whom are ICSTI
members, together with the general ICSTI membership to discuss the Economic
Impacts of Electronic Publishing.

A Fond Farewell. ICSTI's Executive Secretary, Marthe Orfus, is
retiring.

September, 2000 marks the end of an era. ICSTI's Executive Secretary
Marthe Orfus will retire and a new approach for administering ICSTI will be
initiated. Through her many years of service to ICSTI Marthe touched the
hearts of many. ICSTI and its members wish Marthe a joyful and rewarding
retirement!

Introducing ICSTI's new Executive Director and Administrative
Support.

Information International Associates, Inc. (IIa), headquartered in Oak
Ridge, Tennesse (USA), is an information resource management consulting
firm with a speciality in scientific and technical information management.
IIa was awarded the contract to operate the ICSTI secretariat beginning
September, 2000. The calibre of the ICSTI Executive Director is vital,
since he will be the representative of ICSTI's mission both within ICSTI
and to external audiences. For this position, ICSTI's Executive Director
will be Barry Mahon who is well known to many ICSTI members.

CAS Profile, The Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) hosted ICSTI's
Year 2000 General Assembly.

CAS's mission is to be the world's leader in meeting the needs of users of
chemical and related scientific information. To fulfill this purpose, CAS
monitors many types of publicly available documents, including
approximately 8,000 journals from around the world and patents issued by 30
national patent offices plus the European Patent Office and WIPO. This
information is produced in many different languages but all CAS abstracts
and indexing are in English.

        Economic Impacts of Electronic Publishing.

David Weisgerber, CASdweisgerb@cas.org put together an outstanding
discussion session held in conjunction with the General Assembly.
Individual papers, presentations, and/or websites are provided in this
section.
