Job description
A collaboration between Delft University of Technology, Wageningen University and Dutch food industries will develop a unique suite of complementary small angle scattering and NMR techniques to quantify multiscale structures in food systems under dynamic processing conditions. Three PhD students will exploit the food structural expertise available in the consortium for generation of hierarchical models describing food structure.
Two PhD student positions are available in Delft. One student will focus on cellulose by small-angle X-ray scattering during processing and will perform measurements at the synchrotron ESRF in Grenoble. The second student will focus on small-angle neutron scattering on the aggregation of proteins under shear and will do some experimental work at the neutron facility at the Bragg institute in Australia.
Requirements
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of our research, we are looking for an excellent and highly motivated team worker with an MSc degree in physical chemistry or physics. Ideally, you have proven knowledge of scattering techniques and data analysis. Experience in NMR techniques and programming is advantageous. A good command of the English language is required.
Conditions of employment
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment; an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor; and a Doctoral Education Programme aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills. Please visit www.phd.tudelft.nl<http://www.phd.tudelft.nl> for more information.

Department

Applied Sciences
The Department of Radiation Science and Technology (RST) (www.RST.tudelft.nl<http://www.RST.tudelft.nl>) focuses on fundamental research with radiation for energy and health. Applications range from nuclear reactors for energy and isotopes production, new materials for future energy conversion and storage systems, new production routes and applications of radionuclides, and sensors and instrumentation for radiation detection and imaging. In experimental research, extensive use is made of the research facilities of the Reactor Institute Delft, where the department is housed, as well as of large, international research facilities.
The Neutron and Positron Methods in Materials (NPM2) section focuses on the innovative and complementary use of neutron and positron beams for materials science. This section has a long-standing and unique expertise worldwide in both positron annihilation and neutron scattering, which has already led to the development of fundamentally new techniques and concepts.
