The importance of counting statistics in profile refinement is investigated using simulated data sets based on a real neutron diffraction pattern from powdered naphthalene. It is argued that counting statistics usually contribute negligibly to the inaccuracy of the final results for straightforward crystallographic problems, and therefore should not be the basis of an error analysis.
