The unit cells of six compounds with different symmetries have been obtained by indexing powder diffraction data collected on a conventional laboratory-based diffractometer and on station 2.3 of the Synchrotron Radiation Source at Daresbury. The results show that, unless there is considerable sample broadening, the synchrotron data are superior in figures of merit, angular precision and peak half-widths.
