Sample Environment Scientists/Engineers
NIST Center for Neutron Research
National Institute of Standards and Technology

The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking highly motivated candidates for two staff positions in the sample environment team.   These positions require a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering, with initial salary in the range $43,000-$55,000 depending on qualifications and experience.  One position will focus on assisting staff and users with their neutron scattering experiments that utilize a wide range of sophisticated computer controlled sample environment equipment, including low temperature cryostats, furnaces, superconducting magnets, and high pressure systems.   Responsibilities will range from interaction with guest researchers and setup of equipment to extending present sample environment capabilities and developing new systems.  The second position will focus on providing optically-pumped polarized helium-3 cells, spin flippers, and guide fields at the neutron instruments to carry out polarized neutron scattering measurements, as well as extending our present polarized neutron capabilities.  Both staff members are expected to become proficient in sample environment equipment as well as helium-3 polarizers so that they can carry out responsibilities in both areas as needs arise.
