Hello folks -

I have been delighted to see the traffic picking up with people looking and
the dictionary and finding things that they either don't understand or that
are genuinely errors for us to fix.

There is a slight problem, though, in that I am the only one seeing a lot of
this traffic, as people are still sending many of their questions or comments
as mail to me instead of as postings to the list. I get the feeling from
comments a couple of people have made that they are new to mmCIF, and don't
quite understand all of the ins and outs, and consquently they are a little
shy about revealing their ignorance in front of an audience of experts.

Please don't be shy - everything that people have sent is had been helpful,
and we've already been able to deal with a number of outright errors. It is
taking me a little longer to deal with the various questions that require
examples or explanations, but I will get to those in due course. Be sure
that none of your questions or comments have been forgotten.

I wanted to let you all know that there will be a quiet period ahead for me -
I am leaving on a trip this coming Thursday evening, and I won't be back until
Tuesday the 19th. So this will be an excellent chance for all of you to keep
looking at things and keep turning up problems and questions, but none of them
will actually be dealt with until I get back.

I will issue one more version of the dictionary before I leave, probably on
Thursday. I should be able to make all of the fixes that people have sent in,
and I probably will be able to deal with some, but not all, of the questions
and requests for explanations. When I get back from my trip, we will resume
having our regular CIF meetings at Rutgers, and things should start moving
much faster.

As I have said before, I really appreciate the time that people are putting
into helping with this. Keep those cards and letters coming.

Paula
