Re: Regular expressions

Greetings ...

In response to Peter Keller's request about regular expressions, let me first say
that all the expressions in the current dictionary have been run through the
GNU regex library in POSIX mode. I confess that we struggled here quite a bit
trying to find expressions that would run through this library as well as match the
patterns that we required. In doing this, we have found a number of "undocumented
features" (in particular order dependence) in the manner in which the expressions
are processed.

I will try to work with Peter off-line to run the dictionary regular expressions
through several regex libraries and try to find a set that will be satisfactory
across a wider range of platforms.

Many thanks to Peter for his diligence on this issue..

John
