guidance on segments

xplor defines a segment as:
                     "a protein with one continuous
polypeptide chain, a continuous polypeptide chain itself, a substrate,
a cofactor, a ligand, a set of water molecules, or a single nucleic
acid strand. "

In processing PDB entries the segment ID is used in place of the chain
identifier by xplor. What is the intended approach in mmcif? Use of
atom_site.auth_asym_id comes to mind, but then raises the question of
what to use for an actual author asym id. Guidance please.
