Workshop Descriptions

The intention of these workshops is to develop a dialog among the workshop participants on specific areas of both dictionary content and application software. Although the workshops will include some prepared exercises, we would like as much as possible to concentrate on contributed examples (e.g. content questions, local dictionaries, software integration examples).

Workshops A and B
mmCIF Software Tools (Fortran and C/C++)

These workshops will include tutorial sessions focusing on software applications for accessing, manipulating and checking mmCIF data files and dictionaries. The primary focus of these workshops will be on the integration of these mmCIF software tools with new and existing crystallographic, database, NMR, graphics and modeling applications. These workshops will run concurrently and will each focus on a different group of mmCIF software tools. The specific mmCIF software tools will be announced at a later time. Each workshop will be given twice.

Workshop C
WWW-based explorations of the dictionaries and tutorials

This workshop will review the HTML version of the dictionary and the WWW-based tutorials.

An opportunity to review these WWW tools will also be available during Workshop D: mmCIF Software Show and Tell.

Workshop D
mmCIF Software Show and Tell

This workshop will include demonstrations and tutorial exercises using new, experimental or nontraditional applications of mmCIF and STAR. Participants are encouraged to bring their own favorite applications to demonstrate.

Workshop E
New (Non-Crystallographic) Dictionaries

This workshop will present the steps involved in building new dictionaries using the mmCIF/DDL2 dictionary description language for non-crystallographic applications.

Workshop F
Evolution of the mmCIF Dictionary

This workshop will focus on technical issues associated with using and extending the content of the mmCIF dictionary. Some of the broader issues such as community integration and education, management, maintenance and extension of dictionary content, and coordination with other data definition and standardization efforts will also be addressed.

Workshop Computer Resources:

Silicon Graphics will be providing ten O2 workstations equipped with 128MB memory and 20" monitors. Each machine will have the following software installed: IRIX 6.3, FORTRAN 77, C, C++, JAVA (JDK 1.1.2), Perl 5, and TCL (7.4)/TK. Other software can be installed if required. It is expected that these workstations will all have internet access during the workshop. Arrangements can also be made to download and test software in advance of the workshop.
