Teaching Aims

To demonstrate the importance and practical utility of point and space groups in crystallography.

Level

This is suitable for the later years of undergraduate courses and for introductory courses at post-graduate level.

Background

Some acquaintance with the basic principles of symmetry and with the manipulation of vectors is necessary.

Practical Resources

No specific practical resources are required; the booklet contains exercises and gives references to other texts.

Time Required for Teaching

A really satisfactory assimilation of this material would involve between 4 and 8 hours of teaching and discussion depending on the previous knowledge and experience of the students.
