AACr News

The 4th meeting of the Asociación Argentina de Cristalografía (AACr) was held in Bahía Blanca south of Buenos Aires. The program included powder diffraction (chemists and mineralogists) and Protein Crystallography (Physics). The 45 participants included people working at the synchrotron facility in Brazil and the Pasteur Institute at Montevideo, Uruguay, and 16 graduate students from Argentina.
We have a new president, vice president and secretary. The new treasurer elect will share responsibilities with the old one for the next year.
Future meetings are planned for Posadas, near the Iguazú Falls (2009), in Buenos Aires (2010, the bicentenary of Argentina), Bariloche (2011) and in Montevideo, Uruguay (2012).
La Plata will soon host several new instruments related to crystallography including new single crystal diffractometers. A group of geologists has been awarded a powder diffractometer, a group of physics and chemists was awarded an instrument to do EXAFS and XANES and a group of engineers an electron microscope. Two Diffractometers for Protein work have been received as donations, one in Buenos Aires and one in Rosario. It seems that Crystallography may soon flourish in Argentina.
