Redetermination of the low-temperature polymorph of Li2MnSiO4 from single-crystal X-ray data

Acta Cryst. (2012). E68, i68-i69 (http://doi.org/h93)

[Structure model] Structure model of Li2MnSiO4 determined by the present study with projection view along [001]. Polyhedra are indicated by red color for LiO4, blue color for MnO4, and green color for SiO4.

Dilithium manganese(II) orthosilicate, Li2MnSiO4, is currently investigated as an alternative cathode material in lithium ion batteries. The redetermination of the crystal structure of the low-temperature polymorph based on single-crystal X-ray data revealed a perfectly site-ordered model for the Li and Mn sites, consistent with recent solid-state NMR studies. The structural set-up can be derived from a distorted hexagonal close-packed arrangement of O atoms with half of the tetrahedral voids occupied by the three types of cations.
