Open Data in a Big Data World

Following the high-level Science International meeting of December 2015 in South Africa, an important international accord, Open Data in a Big Data World, has been published on the values of open data in the emerging scientific culture of big data.

The IUCr has endorsed this accord, which provides a detailed and reasoned account of responsibilities and opportunities for all stakeholders in the modern data-rich scientific enterprise. The endorsement is supported by a position paper which provides details of how the crystallographic community in general, and the IUCr in particular, respond to the challenges laid out in the Accord.

Open Data in a Big Data World is published by the International Council for Science (ICSU), the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The IUCr position paper is available at https://www.iucr.org/iucr/open-data
