XPAD X-ray hybrid pixel detector

[detector]The new generation of X-ray detector, the hybrid pixel detector, is based on direct detection and single-photon counting processes. A large linearity range, high dynamic and extremely low noise leading to a high signal to noise ratio and fast readout times are just some of their many favourable characteristics.

Scientists [Wenger et al. (2014). Acta Cryst. B70, 783-791; doi:10.1107/S2052520614017338] have installed an XPAD hybrid pixel detector on a laboratory Mach3 kappa diffractometer which allows complete datasets to be collected from single crystals in a fully automated manner.

The researchers show that very high quality diffraction data suitable for accurate charge density studies can be collected with this arrangement.
