German Polish Conference on Crystal Growth (GPCCG 2011)

March 15-18, 2011

In 2009 the German Association for Crystal Growth invited the Polish Society for Crystal Growth to organize a common conference. The joint German-Polish organizing committee was established.

The conference took place on March 14-18, 2011 in Frankfurt/Oder and Slubice , i.e. on both German and Poland sites. A conjungted workshop on 'Photovoltaic Materials' was held from March 14 to 16 in the Kleist Forum in Frankfurt. The annual conferences of both societies were organized as second part in the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice from March 17 to 18. This part was devoted to further advanced materials, like for lasers, detectors, converters, communication, medicine and microelectronics. In the conference participated about 300 scientist from 15 countries. The lectures were given by experts, representing the leading solar companies and also universities and institutes with relation to material science and crystal growth. The meeting was opened by the prime minister of state Brandenburg M. Platzeck who pointed out the importance of crystal growth for alternative energies. The almost half of participants were young scientists whose contribution in form of oral communications and posters (2 sessions) were on a high scientific level.

All participants were shocked by the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan. As an act of our friendship both crystal growth societies transferred 3000 Euro to the Japanese Association for Crystal Growth. This sum was handed over to the Japanese conference guest and lecturer Prof. Koichi Kakimoto for the reconstruction of numerous broken scientific facilities. Professor Yoshikazu Takeda, the President of JACG, sent a letter to the conference members with his thanks for the sympathies and support.

In 2011 Polish Society for Crystal Growth celebrates the 20th anniversary of its creation. Professor Roberto Fornari, the President of International Organization for Crystal Growth (IOCG) congratulated the co-founders of PSCG (PTWK) Prof. Anna Pajaczkowska and Prof. Keshra Sangwal and handed over honorary letters on behalf of IOCG. The members of PSCG additionally signed the album-books for the first presidents of PSCG.

During the conference also the annual DGKK meeting with board selection for the period 2012-13 took place. Further, the presented members of the IOCG Executive Committee and announced conference chairs discussed the common future steps to organize the ICCG-17 in Warsaw 2013.

The atmosphere on the conference was very friendly and creative. The banquet in the Bach Hall of old Closter and reception of the Lord Mayor at City Hall Frankfurt/Oder were unforgettable. In our opinion such events bind together the crystal grower communities and our countries very effectively.
