We do not have a record of any activities in this country organized for the International Year of Crystallography 2014 or its follow-up initiatives. We are very keen to maintain a record of all such activities. If you know of any, please tell us about them by sending an email to iycr2014@iucr.org.

This extract from 50 Years of X-ray Diffraction, edited by P. P. Ewald and published in 1962, recounts the early development of crystallography in this region.

Finland

The application of X-ray diffraction techniques to structure analysis was started in Finland in 1925 by Professor S. A. Wasastjerna. His first studies in this field dealt with the structure of dolomite and in 1925 included work on the atomic configuration of the sulphate group. Of his later work, the research begun in 1939 into the structure of the solid solutions of alkali halogenides, is worthy of note. In this investigation Wasastjerna carried out precision measurements of the diffracted intensities and proposed a new theory for the structures of the solid solutions which was related to his earlier calculations of ionic radii. In papers dating from 1945 he discussed the phenomena of thermal vibrations and lattice deformation.

Wasastjerna's pupils have continued his work in the fields mentioned above. Professor E. Laurila has measured the atomic form factors of the noble gases, Professor P. E. Tahvonen studied rotation of the nitrate group and Professor U. Korhonen developed Fourier methods and investigated the deformation of electron clouds by X-ray intensity measurements. Professor M. Kantola used X-ray diffraction for the study of the solid solutions of the alkali halogenides, paying attention to their miscibility, thermal expansion and formation by diffusion in the solid phase. Professor V. Hovi has developed the solid solution theory proposed by Wasastjerna and examined the overlapping of the electron clouds in ionic crystals.
