SURFING THE CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC NET (CRYSNET) WORKSHOPS

H.D. Flack

Laboratoire de Cristallographie, University of Geneva, Switzerland.

The Workshops' principal objective is give practical experience in general Internet tools of use to crystallographers and to show the main 'Crystallographic' resources available over the Internet. In this way it is intended both to encourage the wider use of existing basic facilities and to stimulate interest in and applications of more advanced techniques. Some of the organizational and technical aspects of the Internet will also be briefly covered. The Workshop will function by way of illustrated talks and hands-on use of on-line computers under the guidance of expert speakers and tutors with whom participants will have ample time to interact. The major thrust of the workshop will be on the effective use of pre-installed hardware and software.

To cater for the needs of both novices and experts, the Workshop will be in two parts. Part A will address the needs of the novice or occasional user who wishes to see basic Internet tools such as e-mail, news, ftp and WWW in use and to be shown what daily advantage can really be drawn from them. Part B will extend the palette of Internet tools of a user who already has some experience. In particular training will be provided to enable a person to make the step from being just a user to becoming an information provider.

A workshop booklet in the form of A Crystallographer's Guide to Internet Tools and Resources containing concise and clear descriptions of the material presented will be distributed to participants. This resource guide will also be made available over the World-Wide Web.

Within the limitations of time, equipment and people it is intended to treat the following tools and resources:

General Internet Tools

Crystallographic Internet Tools and Resources
