Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 8, at the beautifully restored 5th Avenue Theatre located 4 blocks from the Convention Center on 5th Avenue between Union Street and University Street. The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m.; doors to the theater will open at 3:45 p.m. The ceremony will include welcoming remarks, presentation of the Ewald Award and lecture by recipient Professor Michael Rossmann of Purdue University, followed by a lively, spectacular program featuring the world-famous Flying Karamazov Brothers.

Welcoming Reception

Following the Opening Ceremony at the 5th Avenue Theatre, is a Welcoming Reception that shouldn't be missed. You are invited to this exciting event held at the brand new Bell Harbor International Conference Center on the Bell Street Pier at the heart of Seattle's breathtaking waterfront. Enjoy refreshments and entertainment as you watch the sun set over Elliott Bay. Roundtrip transportation to the Welcoming Reception is provided. Buses will board beginning at 6:45 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel on Union Street. The reception will conclude at 10 p.m. and buses will be available to return you to the Sheraton Hotel any time between 8:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.

Young Scientist Mixer

The Young Scientist Special Interest Group of the American Crystallographic Association invites all Young Scientists to attend a mixer on Saturday evening, August 10, at 7:00 p.m. at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (1100 Fairview Avenue North). The mixer is sponsored by the ACA, IUCr and the Charles Supper Company. The center is located near the shores of Lake Union just north of downtown Seattle. A variety of light food and drink will be provided. Participants are encouraged to walk to the 'Hutch' (about a 15-30 minute walk from downtown hotels or the University of Washington campus) or to take a Metro bus. Several bus routes (#70-74) run from downtown Seattle, past the 'Hutch', tot eh UW campus, (and back) every 15-20 minutes Saturday evenings. The cost is $0.85 and the bus ride is 5-10 minutes long. Limited return van service will be available upon special request.

Pacific Science Center Gala

Following the daytime excursions on Tuesday, August 13, an all-conference special event is scheduled at the Pacific Science Center from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. The Pacific Science Center, located in the shadow of the Seattle Space Needle, invites visitors to explore science, mathematics and technology through hands-on and interactive exhibits in a unique and dynamic setting. Enjoy refreshments, entertainment and the opportunity to socialize with your colleagues from around the world. The cost of this event is included in your registration fee. Buses will be available to transport you and your registered guests to the Pacific Science Center any time between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Gather in the second floor lobby of the Sheraton Hotel; buses will board on Union Street. Catch a returning bus anytime after 8:30 p.m. at the Denny Street entrance of the Pacific Science Center. The last bus to leave the Pacific Science Center will depart at 10:30 p.m.

Congress Banquet

The Congress Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, August 15, in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel. A cash bar reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the banquet at 7:00 p.m. The cost of the banquet is $50 and is separate from the registration fee. Subject to availability, tickets may be purchased at the registration desk before 12:00 noon on Monday, August 12.

Optional Daytime Excursions

There are no scientific sessions scheduled for Tuesday, August 13. Meeting participants may choose to participate in a variety of excursions. Please indicate your preference on the registration form on page 19 and include payment with your registration fee. On site excursion sign up will be available through 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, but we cannot guarantee your first choice and strongly recommend advance tour registration.

Buses will load in the same location for all excursions. Meet 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time in the Sheraton Hotel's second floor lobby. Buses will load on Union Street.

Northwest Lodge Retreat 8:45 a.m. ­ 4:00 p.m.

Situated on the banks of the Agate Pass Inlet, Kiana Lodge's breathtaking setting offers a spectacular escape. This tour will begin with a 30 minute ride on a Washington State Ferry through the Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island. We'll visit the charming town of Poulsbo with its specialty shops and Scandinavian traditions. Next, enjoy a delicious luncheon at Kiana Lodge, a private retreat with beautiful grounds and gardens. The luncheon will be served outdoors or in the longhouse and will feature fresh salmon cooked over an open alder fire. Cost: $55/person including lunch.

Mt. Rainier Day Tour 8:00 a.m. ­ 6:00 p.m.

Standing 14,411 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier is Washington state's greatest attraction. This tour will stop at Narada Falls on the way up to the Paradise Lodge in Mt. Rainier National Park. Enjoy the panoramic view, take a short hike through alpine meadows, and enjoy a gourmet box lunch. Be sure to bring your camera to capture magnificent views and glaciers. (Note: Mt. Rainier is a 2 1/2 hour ride from Seattle) Cost: $50/person including lunch.

Snoqualmie Falls & Northwest Winery Tour 9:00 a.m. ­ 3:00 p.m.

Ride through the foothills of the Cascade Mountains to view Snoqualmie Falls. 97 feet higher than Niagara, Snoqualmie Falls cascade 268 feet to the canyon below. The tour continues on scenic back roads of the countryside to Washington's premier winery, Chateau Ste. Michelle. Nestled on 87 acres of rolling grounds, the original Manor House is surrounded by formal gardens, trout ponds and hundreds of lush shrubs and flowers. During the private tour, guests will witness the wine making process followed by an opportunity to sample the wines. The tour will then take guests to the nearby Columbia Winery for a comparison wine tasting and a delicious luncheon. Cost: $45/person.

Sample Seattle ­ A Deluxe City Tour

8:30 a.m. ­ 12:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. ­ 5:00 p.m.

Ride into historic Pioneer Square, one of Seattle's oldest areas featuring early 1900's architecture, wonderful art galleries and specialty shops. Visit the third largest Asian International District on the west coast. Continue along Lake Washington into the Arboretum and the 680 acre University of Washington campus. Stop at the Hiram Chittenden Locks and Salmon Ladder where saltwater Puget Sound meets fresh water Lake Union and visitors can watch the seasonal migration of salmon. Travel along the waterfront to the popular Pike Place Market where over 250 vendors sell everything from fresh fish, vegetables and flowers to hand-crafted specialty items. Cost: $20/person.

Panoramic Tour

9:30 a.m. ­ 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. ­ 4:30 p.m.

Explore Seattle by land and sea. This tour combines an informative and scenic city tour with a narrated harbor cruise of Elliott Bay. Ride by Seattle Center and the Space Needle, site of the 1962 World's Fair. Proceed to Pioneer Square, the Kingdome, Pike Place Market, the H.M. Chittenden Locks, Magnolia Bluff, and the waterfront. Then embark on a harbor cruise for an unforget table view of the Seattle skyline and an interesting look inside Harbor Island. Cost: $28/person.
