Two combined systems of synchrotron radiation and laser have been constructed for solid-state research. One is a laser-induced fluorescence system to observe synchrotron radiation-induced desorption of alkali atoms from ionic crystals, which consists of a laser diode with a high repetition rate and synchrotron radiation under a single-bunch operation. The other is a system of two-photon spectroscopy, which is based on the combination of synchrotron radiation pulses with a low intensity and high repetition rate and Nd:YAG laser pulses with a high intensity and low repetition rate. The experimental systems and the preliminary results are presented in this report.

SPring-8 has succeeded in achieving extremely stable top-up operation by retrofitting. Here the process of retrofitting is discussed, presenting key technical factors for stabilization of top-up operation. Examples are provided showing the value of top-up operation in various experiments.

The spin dimer magnet NaCu2VP2O10 was discovered, and its crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction. Maximum magnetic susceptibility was observed at ∼60 K and NaCu2VP2O10 became non-magnetic upon further cooling.

The strontium tungstate Sr3W2O9 was obtained using a high-pressure synthesis technique. The structure was found to be a hettotype structure of the high-pressure phase of Ba3W2O9. One characteristic of the structure is the breaking of the threefold rotation symmetry existing in the high-pressure phase of Ba3W2O9.
