Focusing of an X-ray free-electron laser enables the production of ultrahigh-intensity X-ray pulses. X-ray nanobeams of a free-electron laser were generated using reflective focusing optics combined with speckle interferometry.

Apodized X-ray illumination generated by a two-stage deformable Kirkpatrick–Baez mirror system was employed to improve the image quality in scanning X-ray fluorescence microscopy. It is also demonstrated that the apodized X-ray illumination enables non-isolated objects to be imaged by coherent X-ray diffractive imaging in a non-scanning mode.

A soluble mutant of the outer-membrane lipoprotein receptor LolB from E. coli was crystallized in two forms. The monoclinic and hexagonal crystals diffracted X-rays to 1.9 and 2.2 Å resolution, respectively, and MAD phasing of monoclinic crystals of the selenomethionylated protein was successful.

Structural analysis of La/Al2O3 catalyst materials was carried out by means of XRD and La K-edge XAFS. Influences of loading amounts and treatment temperature on the local structure around La were investigated. La atoms are supported on [gamma]-Al2O3 in a highly dispersed form when a loading amount is less than 0.2 mmol g(Al2O3)-1, and structural transformation of the La species does not take place in the temperature ranges of 873-1273 K. La species of highly loaded catalysts start to change their structure from oxide-like form to the aluminate at 1073 K. Formation of LaAlO3 perovskite on the catalyst surface requires a concentration of La atoms above 0.5 mmol g(Al2O3)-1 (7.5 wt% as La2O3).

RIXS spectra are invariant to their integration over incident-photon energies within the core-hole lifetime. With hv2 spectrometers, the whole lifetime-wide bandwidth of synchrotron radiation can be utilized without compromising the energy resolution of the RIXS spectra.
