Circularly polarized X-rays were produced between 0.14 and 0.16 nm using a perfect-crystal phase retarder in Bragg geometry. Linear polarization of the on-axis synchrotron radiation was converted to circular polarization of the two helicities with degree of circular polarization higher than 0.98.

The numerical results for a bent parabolic mirror monochromator designed for the SPring-8/Figure-8 soft X-ray undulator are described. A thermal and structural finite-element analysis is presented for side-cooled premirrors of the bent parabolic mirror monochromator. Using a ray-tracing code, the effect of the final induced figure errors on the performance of the premirror are discussed.

A spin-contrast-variation neutron powder diffractometry technique is developed, where the coherent scattering length of hydrogen is controlled by proton polarization. This technique extracts the hydrogen structure factor, i.e. the contribution of hydrogen atoms to a crystal's structure factor.
