The title compound, [Zn(C6H10N2S2)4](ClO4)2, containing four inner-salt ligands, is considered to retain an inner-salt structure in the crystal structure, where the planes of the carbenium and the di­thio­carboxyl­ate moieties are nearly perpendicular to each other [85 (2)°]. The asymmetric unit consists of one-half of the complex mol­ecule, as the complex has twofold crystallographic symmetry. The backbone C-C bond length [N2C-CS2 = 1.488 (7) Å] is significantly shorter than that of a normal C-C single bond.

The title compound, C10H16N2O2S2, is considered to maintain an inner-salt structure in the crystal, where the planes of the carbenium and the thio­carboxyl­ate moieties are nearly perpendicular to each other [77 (2)°], and the backbone C-C bond length [N2C-CS2 1.510 (2) Å] is significantly shorter than a normal C-C single-bond length.

An imaging soft X-ray microscope with zone plates has been installed at Rits SR Center (Ritsumeikan University, Kusatsu, Japan). With this microscope, specimens were set in air, which made it possible to investigate the specimens without breaking the vacuum of the microscope. The specimens can be prefocused with an optical microscope. Dry and wet biospecimens in air were observed. A new optical system was designed to improve the resolution.

The putative sensor histidine kinase domain of the cytoplasmic protein HksP4 from the hyperthermophilic bacterium A. aeolicus VF5 was expressed, purified and crystallized by the sitting-drop vapour-diffusion method. Crystals were obtained in the presence of ATP and AMPPNP; they were found to belong to the same space group P212121 and diffracted X-rays to 3.1 and 2.9 Å resolution, respectively.

Ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and second-order nonlinear optical behavior are technologically important. Because these properties are attributable to the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structure[1], the search for materials exhibiting such characteristics must begin with a search of NCS materials. Among them, LiNbO3-type (LN-type) compounds with a chemical formula of ABX3 exhibit NSC structures with hexagonal polar space group R3c whose BX6 octahedra three-dimensionally share their corners the same as perovskite-type compounds[2]. In LN-type compounds, the A cation - B cation repulsion directs the spontaneous polarization along c-axis(Fig. 1). Therefore, we might find attractive functional properties by the selection of constituent ions based on their having a naturally occurring polar LN-type structure attributable to the cation-cation repulsion. With the ideas mentioned above, we have investigated the high-pressure synthesis and characterization of novel LN-type oxides such as ZnSnO3, PbNiO3, CdPbO3 as well as known MnMO3 (M = Ti, Sn). Recently, we have successfully synthesized a polar LN-type titanate ZnTiO3 (LN-ZTO) under high pressure and high temperature [3]. The first principles calculation indicates that LN-ZTO is a meta-stable phase obtained by the transformation in the decompression process from the perovskite-type phase, which is stable at high pressure and high temperature. The Rietveld structural refinement reveals that LN-ZTO exhibits greater intra-distortion of the TiO6 in LN-ZTO than that of the SnO6 in LN-type ZnSnO3 (LN-ZSO). The estimated spontaneous polarization are greater than those of LN-ZSO, which is attributed to the great displacement of Ti along c-axis and the greater Born effective charge of Ti (+6.1) than that of Sn (+4.1). Furthermore, the spontaneous polarization of LN-ZTO is greater than that of LiNbO3, indicating that LN-ZTO, like LiNbO3, is a candidate ferroelectric material with high performance. The second harmonic generation (SHG) response of LN-ZTO is 24 times greater than that of LN-ZSO. The findings indicate that the intra-octahedral distortion, spontaneous polarization, and SHG response are caused by the stabilization of the polar LN-type structure and reinforced by the second-order Jahn-Teller effect attributable to the orbital interaction between oxygen ions and d0 ions such as Ti4+. We also discuss the relationship between the intra-distortion of BO6 and polarity in several LN-type oxides.

A compact superconducting storage ring (0.575 GeV and 300 mA) with a racetrack microtron injection system was installed at Ritsumeikan University and has been operated successfully since April 1996. As the radius of the circular electron orbit is small (0.5 m), it is possible to use a radiation beam of relatively high photon flux at a short distance from the source point. Beamlines have been constructed including those for XAFS, soft X-ray spectroscopy, VUV spectroscopy, fluorescent X-ray analysis, soft X-ray microscopy, X-ray diffraction/scattering and photoelectron spectroscopy; the photoelectron spectrometer is combined with an ion-beam-scattering spectrometer to obtain information both on the electronic states and on the atomic arrangements of a solid surface. In addition there are two beamlines, one for LIGA exposure and the other for synchrotron radiation ablation, which are devoted to producing new devices and materials. The synchrotron radiation facility is open not only to users in the University but also to researchers in industry, governmental institutions and other universities.

The crystal structure of the low-temperature (LT) modification of LaBO3 has been redetermined from single-crystal X-ray data; the resulting structure confirms the previous study [Abdullaev, Dzhafarov & Mamedov (1976). Azerbaidzhanskii Khim. Zh. pp. 117–120], but with improved precision. LT-LaBO3 crystallizes in space group Pnma and adopts the aragonite-type structure. Except for one O atom, which is situated on a general position, all other atoms (one La, one B and a second O atom) lie on mirror planes. The structure is composed of LaO9 polyhedra with an average La—O distance of 2.593 Å and trigonal BO3 groups with an average B—O distance of 1.373 Å. Slight anisotropies of the thermal vibrations of La and B atoms suggest that the electrostatic La...La and La...B inter­actions across the shared edges are weak.
