An in situ XAFS cell was developed and used for the structural analysis of a Rh ion-exchanged zeolite catalyst during high-pressure hydrogenation of carbon dioxide. The in situ cell enabled analyses of the catalyst structures that changed with the reaction atmosphere and elapsed time; the peak assigned to Rh-O scattering changed to that assigned to Rh-Rh scattering at 404 K during the pretreatment by hydrogen. After 30 min of the carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction, the peak intensity assigned to Rh-Rh scattering increased corresponding to the increase in the catalytic activity.

The cation of the title compound, H4tptn4+·4ClO4-·H2O, where H4tptn4+ is N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridinio­methyl)-1,3-di­amino­propane (C27H34N64+), contains an intramolecular N-H...N hydrogen bond, and the average ring angle at the N atoms in the pyridinium rings is 123.6 (1)°. Intermolecular N-H...O and O-H...O hydrogen bonds are also found in the crystal structure.

The enantiomorphs of an ambient-pressure superconductor [kappa]-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 [BEDT-TTF is bis­(ethyl­ene­dithio)­tetra­thia­fulvalene] have been successfully identified using the method of convergent-beam electron diffraction. This indicates that a micrometre-sized small crystallite is enough to identify its enantiomorphs even in an organic crystal. Stacking faults in [kappa]-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 have also been found, the existence of which has not been noted from conventional X-ray diffraction methods.
