An equimolar mixture of stearic acid (octadecanoic acid) and nicotinamide (3-pyridinecarboxamide) in acetone yields crystals of a 1:1 complex, C18H36O2·C6H6N2O. In this structure, the 1:1 complex forms a dimer through hydrogen bonds between the amide groups, thus forming a lamellar structure. The alkyl chain of stearic acid has an all-trans conformation.

The crystal structure of endo-1,4-
-glucanase from the earthworm Eisenia fetida, which retained sufficient cellulase activity at low temperature, was determined at 1.5 Å resolution.

Analysis of serial femtosecond crystallographic data measured using the SACLA free-electron laser at RIKEN Harima shows the weak anomalous signal from naturally occurring S atoms in a protein.

Fixed targets or chips offer an efficient means of high-throughput microcrystal delivery for serial measurements at synchrotrons and XFELs. A low-background Mylar sandwich chip that alleviates the challenges of chip availability and crystal loading is described.

As a basic layered structure for giant magnetoresistive (GMR) heads, NiFe/Cu/NiFe/Ta/Si substrate was measured by X-ray reflectometry at Cu K
, Cu K
and Cu K-absorption-edge energies. The accuracy of both the Cu thickness and the interface width between the upper NiFe and the Cu layers was found to improve in the order Cu K
< Cu K
< Cu K-edge. The final thickness and interface width values obtained from Cu K
reflectivity are in good agreement with those from the Cu K-edge. The anomalous-dispersion effect is useful in the more accurate analysis of the layered structure of transition metal multilayers because it causes a large difference in the refractive indices of specific elements near the absorption edge. The K
X-rays, which can be produced from conventional X-ray sources, are also available for the accurate analysis of reflectivity measurements.

X-ray crystal structures were determined of the wild type and an inactive mutant of α-amylase from the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Structural analyses reveal the molecular properties that are responsible for catalytic activity at low temperatures and substrate recognition.

At the 2.5 GeV ring of the Photon Factory, a single-pass beam-position monitor (BPM) system is being prepared for the storage ring and the beam transport line. In the storage ring, the injected beam position during the first several turns can be measured with a single injection pulse. The BPM system has an adequate performance, useful for the commissioning of the new low-emittance lattice. Several stripline BPMs are being installed in the beam transport line. The continuous monitoring of the orbit in the beam transport line will be useful for the stabilization of the injection energy as well as the injection beam orbit.

In the title compound, [Fe(C5H5)(C6H15Si)(C7H9N)(CO)], the Fe atom is coordinated by carbonyl, 3,5-dimethylpyridine, triethylsilyl and cyclopentadienyl ligands in a typical piano-stool structure. The Fe-Si and Fe-N distances are 2.3341 (9) and 1.982 (2) Å, respectively.

Peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase from E. coli has been crystallized in complex with the acceptor-T
C domain of tRNA. Diffraction data have been collected and processed to 2.4 Å resolution.

Glimepiride, 1-{4-[2-(3-ethyl-4-methyl-2-oxo-3-pyrroline-1-carboxyamido)ethyl]phenylsulfonyl}-3-(trans-4-methylcyclohexyl)urea, C24H34N4O5S, is a drug used in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

The complex of NADH and 3
-HSD from Pseudomonas sp. B-0831 has been crystallized and X-ray diffraction data have been collected to 1.8 Å resolution.

Reconstruction of the Photon Factory storage ring (PF ring; 2.5 GeV) is now in progress to provide very brilliant synchrotron radiation to users, i.e. the emittance is being reduced by a factor of five. Components, such as the quadrupole and sextupole magnets, vacuum chambers, beamlines and beam-position monitors, are being replaced by new ones in 16 normal-cell sections of the PF ring. The accelerating cavities, injection systems and control systems are also being replaced. Operation will commence when the improvements are completed on 1 October 1997.
