SinCris DEMON Program Suite Available for Proteins

home    software section
The program suite DEMON (short for DEnsity MOdificatioN) may be downloaded, free of charge, by anonymous ftp from node sgjs1.weizmann.ac.il (132.76.57.13) at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel.

user name: anonymous
password: user your own last name
then "cd pub" (no quotes, of course)
then "mget *.tar.Z" (also no quotes, hit "y" when requested)
then "quit" to close the connection.
There are 3 compressed tar files, called demon.tar.Z, jobs.tar.Z and subrs.tar.Z. These should be uncompressed (using the command "uncompress", e.g. uncompress demon.tar).

THE FOLLOWING ASSUMES YOU USE AN SGI MACHINE. PROG MODIFICATIONS MAY BE REQUIRED IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE and are avaiable on request. Downloading the program suite DEMON implies the acceptance of the normal rules of conduct concerning freely available software, which can be summarized simply by "Do not do to this software what you would not like to be done to your own software".

To be more specific:

  1. Not to redistribute, patent or sell the programs;
  2. Not to modify or delete the names of authors in the programs (Modifications may be introduced in the programs, but the name of the person making the changes should be ADDED to the section of the program manual dealing with the program history);
  3. To inform the author of DEMON of any useful modifications, so that these may be made available to the crytallographic community;
  4. To properly acknowledge the use of the software suite DEMON in any publications resulting from its use.
A description of the file system used, and a handout of lecture (written for the EMBO course entitled "Refinement Techniques and Map Interpretation" which was held in Heidelberg, May 2 to May 7, 1993) which is an introduction to the uses of non-crystallographic symmetry averaging, may be obtained, also free of charge, from:

Fred. Vellieux

There is currently no publication describing the program suite and algorithms used. Thus, a proper reference may be: "F.M.D. Vellieux, unpublished results; F.M.D. Vellieux, DEMON program suite manuals, 1993".
