Logo design competition for the International Year of Crystallography

The winning entry in the competition for a logo for the International Year of Crystallography was submitted by Dr Michele Zema from the University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy. His design appears below, and is available at a number of resolutions and in the form of a banner from this link. The design emphasizes the role of diffraction in the development of crystallography as a branch of science, with the zero in the representation of the festival year coinciding with the central beam of a hypothetical diffraction experiment, and the extended diffraction pattern forming the background.
