Mineralogy 2022 opens in Lyon

Building on the successes of recent International Years that have celebrated basic sciences [e.g. Chemistry 2011; Crystallography 2014 (IYCr2014); Light 2015; Periodic Table of Chemical Elements 2019], the UNESCO-approved International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development 2022 (IYBSSD2022) was launched in early July 2022. Now, hot on its heels, today sees the launch of Mineralogy 2022, a global initiative to highlight the importance of mineralogy as a basic fundamental science.

The International Mineralogical Association (IMA) declared 2022 the Year of Mineralogy as it celebrates the bicentennial of the death of René Just Haüy (born 1743), a father of modern mineralogy and crystallography. The Year will be formally launched by IMA Past President, Patrick Cordier, and IUCr Executive Outreach Officer, Michele Zema, at the IMA2022 Congress (https://ima2022.fr/). Mineralogy 2022 will take place under the patronage of the IYBSSD2022, of which the IUCr is one of the Founding Unions.
