While there are far more expensive options in the local area, the most comfortable, cost effective and convenient accomodation is to stay at the University of Siena run conference center, the 14th century ex-monastery, the Certosa di Pontignano. The expected costs for Certosa di Pontignano accomodation (which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner) range from 51 to 71 Euros per night (with tax); and are given below. Every room has a network connection to the Internet.
There is nice Bed & Breafast/country house called the Casa Lucia around 2 km away from the Certosa di Pontignano. The Casa Lucia is a complex of old stone buildings into furnished apartments. This includes, living room with convertible sofa, small kitchen, double room, bath with shower/WC, TV, telephone, heating, and private parking.
In addition there is a Camping site (Siena Colleverde) about 5-6 Km away from the Certosa di Pontignano in between Siena and the Certosa for the more tricherous scientists. It is set on a hill, has toilets suitable to handicapped people, public telephone boxes, camper Service, infirmary, restaurant, market, and bar. It accepts a variety of Credit cards.
Certosa di Pontignano, of the University of Siena, Tuscany, Italy
The Certosa di Pontignano is not a hotel, but a university guest house with 44 rooms, each with its bathroom: 20 single rooms, 18 double rooms, 4 double beds and 1 double + 1 French bed with a shared bathroom. This makes it especially suitable for hosting conventions and conferences with about 60 to 70 participants. |
Costs known at January 2004 are: 51.5 Euros a night including tax for double occupancy; 62.00 Euros a night including tax for single occupancy; and 71.00 Euros a night including tax for single occupancy in a double room. Participants would be expected to book for the required 5 nights that the school runs over. The Siena area is allegedly a haunt for rich English tourists, making it unlikely that reasonable prices for convenient and sanitary accomodation can be found outside the Certosa di Pontignano at the time of the computing school. |
