It is a privilege and a pleasure to serve the vibrant community of early career scientists as part of the newly formed Early Career Scientists Division (ECSD) of the IUCr. At recent conferences and meetings, we have been inspired by the incredible diversity of applications of crystallography in different scientific disciplines.

A positive outcome of the challenging COVID-19 era has been the widespread use of online communication tools in meetings and various events. This has enabled researchers not only to gain access to basic to advanced facilities but also to gain a deeper understanding of crystallography and the application of structural science techniques through online courses and workshops that can greatly enhance their research. Today, we can host more online conferences and workshops, which has transformed the scientific community by enabling discussions and collaborations on virtual platforms. This trend has been key to expanding networks and fostering partnerships between different institutions and laboratories, especially for young or new researchers who face barriers such as difficulties in mobility to laboratories and research facilities or funding to attend meetings and conferences.

With the newly formed ECSD, we aim to create a dynamic and inclusive platform that promotes collaboration, collegiality, interlaboratory access, knowledge sharing and crystallography education. The ECSD is composed of structural scientists with different backgrounds from all regional associations, with the intention of facilitating the communication between the community and the IUCr. Our vision is to connect and unite young local societies and associations from different regions of the world, bridging gaps and promoting collective growth in the field.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with such a passionate and talented community. Together, we can continue to expand the boundaries of science and inspire the next generation of structural scientists. We look forward to working with each and every one of you to make this vision a reality.
