Research with High Energy X-Rays at Ultra-Low Emittance Sources

High-energy X-rays are used in many fields of science, from solid-state physics, chemistry and biomedical science to geoscience, engineering materials science and nanotechnology. PETRA IV can provide unique conditions for experiments with high-energy X-rays. In particular, the high-energy X-ray beam can be efficiently focused to obtain local information about the sample, e.g. using powder and single-crystal diffraction, pair-distribution-function (PDF) analysis, grain mapping, imaging in absorption and phase contrast, and potentially even coherent X-ray diffraction imaging. In this way, PETRA IV opens a unique perspective for in-situ and operando experiments.
The scientific case for high-energy X-rays at an ultra-low emittance source will be discussed together with the required experimental parameters.

RimerThe Crystal Growth and Assembly Gordon Research Conference (previously known as "Thin Film and Crystal Growth Mechanisms GRC") is dedicated to the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental atomic and nanoscale physics and chemistry that are central to the nucleation and growth of crystals for a wide array of technologies. This well-established conference draws researchers from around the world in the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, and beyond. Historically, the conference has emphasized concepts rather than specific materials, technologies or growth methods. This focus has attracted scientists with a broad range of specializations, from semiconductor nanowires to biomineralization and from in situ microscopy to multi-scale computer simulations, who find common inspiration in seeing how the general principles of crystal thermodynamics and growth kinetics are applicable to many fields.Â
The 2017 Crystal Growth and Assembly GRC will continue the tradition of a highly interdisciplinary program, highlighting the most recent developments in the field. It will cover topics like nucleation, low-dimensional crystals, surface kinetics, bulk crystallization, nanocrystals and biomineralization. This year a particular focus will be on the assembly of meta-materials that show a hierarchy of ordering.Â
All attendees are encouraged to present posters, from which some will be selected for short oral presentations. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with exciting invited lectures, which are complemented by lively poster sessions, as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented. An informal power hour focusing on the career development of women in science will be included as well.Â
We are excited that this year we can again offer the corresponding Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) that will highlight graduate student and postdoctoral research in a meeting preceding the GRC and with the same broad scope of topics.

Call for Papers
In recent years, both synchrotron and laboratory-based facilities have witnessed astounding progress in hard x-ray nanoimaging instruments and methods. Nanoprobes with sub-100-nm resolution have proliferated, while imaging with 1-nm spatial resolution may soon become possible. Combination and correlation with other analytical techniques such as x-ray spectroscopy, diffraction, tomography, ptychography, in-situ environment, and other methods are solving more important questions than ever.ÂThis conference will focus on the latest developments in optics, instrumentation and systems, data science, and integration with other techniques, for both scanning and full-field x-ray microscopes, including:
- nanoprobes, full-field microscopes, and dedicated beamlines
- high-resolution nanofocusing optics
- instruments for nanoimaging and nanopositioning
- in-situ and operando sample environments
- data science and data management
- novel nanoimaging methods and correlative techniques
- advanced control or detection schemes.

In 2017, the annual meeting of the British Association of Crystal Growth (BACG) will take place in Manchester, from 27th to 30th of June.
An exciting programme comprising the latest developments in the areas of crystal growth, nucleation, crystallisation engineering and characterisation of crystalline materials is being prepared.
The BACG 2017 will include keynote lectures, contributed lectures and posters as well as the BACG annual lecture and young scientist of the year award.
