5th School on Representational Analysis and Magnetic Structures (RAMS)

The school is targeted towards researchers interested in applying representational analysis for solving magnetic structures with neutron diffraction. Â The school will cover representational analysis and the theory of magnetic structures. Â The program will include both lectures and labs working with software such as SaraH and FULLPROF. Â This year, we will also cover magnetic symmetry tools developed on the Bilbao crystallographic server. Â Invited lecturers include Andrew Wills (U. College, London), Â V. Ovidiu Garlea (ORNL), Â Clarina Dela Cruz (ORNL), Â and Juan Manuel Perez-Mato (Universidad del Pais Vasco). Â Â Â
The school will be hosted at the University of Maryland College Park campus and participants can stay on campus at discounted prices. Â The school will begin Monday morning, August 3rd, and end Thursday late afternoon, August 6th. Â Â

St Andrews CCP4 Protein Crystallography Summer School

The School is intended for first year postgraduates or postdocs new to crystallography. The week is very intensive, and gives a concentrated overview of the methods which many find useful.
As in the past, priority is given to UK applicants because of the funding arrangements, but is open to a limited number of overseas applicants.

The aim of the ESCG School is to bring together PhD students and young researchers from all over Europe and the rest of the world in a warm and stimulating atmosphere to introduce them to the fundamental concepts and mechanisms governing crystal growth processes. Nowadays, many schools, tutorials and brief courses on specific aspects of the growth of advanced materials are being offered to the International Crystal Growth community; however, the importance of raising the new generation of crystal growers with an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental concepts at the basis of crystal growth science is never enough emphasized. To fill the gap, the ESCG School intends to address the fundamental aspects of the science and technology of crystal growth, with emphasis on the fundamental thermodynamics, fluid-dynamics, kinetics and atomistic mechanisms ruling crystal growth processes; these mechanisms will be presented along with principles of crystallization from the melt, liquid and vapour, for application to the synthesis of bulk, epitaxial, and nanosized crystals. The ambition of the School is to give the attendees a unitary view of the science and technology of crystal growth, despite the many and apparently diverse materials fields it nowadays applies. Selected senior experts in the field will give the lectures, answer your questions and are available for discussions.
ESCG is also the official AIC School 2015. It will take place in conjunction with the Fifth European Conference on Crystal Growth (ECCG5), which will be held also in Bologna in the days after the School. We cordially invite you to participate in this school and mark the dates in your agenda.

Crystallography: Fundamentals, Online Tools and Applications
The European Crystallographic Association (ECA) and the University of Oviedo invite the world-wide crystallographic community (and all scientists and students working in any related field) to an intensive session of working together and learning crystallography from each other.
With help from our sponsors, we have achieved a registration cost of 570 euros (young academic, including accommodation and meals). We expect to have student bursaries available to reduce the cost further for a limited number of attendees. The number of attendees is limited to 90 students.
The application deadline is March 31st, 2015.

UXSS2015. Ultrafast X-ray Summer School 2015

UXSS 2015 is jointly organized by the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) at DESY and the PULSE institute at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The summer school program will be highly interdisciplinary, with topics ranging from accelerator physics to molecular biology.Please note that the number of summer school participants will be limited. In order to facilitate the selection of participants, we are asking applicants to provide a short text describing their educational and scientific background and their motivation for applying for participation in UXSS 2015. The applicants will be asked to pay a registration fee in the amount of 100 EUR. Accepted applicants will receive financial support for travel and local expenses, provided by the VolkswagenStiftung.

5th Annual CLS Mx Data Collection School

The Canadian Macromolecular Crystallography Facility (CMCF) is pleased to announce an intensive 5-day hands-on synchrotron data collection school at the Canadian Light Source. Participants will attend a series of lectures and be actively engaged in macromolecular crystallography (Mx) data collection at CMCF beamlines. Completing the school will enable participants to make effective use of the beamlines remotely and will better equip participants to collect diffraction data on-site. This year's invited speaker is Dr. Paul Adams from the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. He will guide participants through an in-depth look at using Phenix during structure solution. Participants should have a basic grounding in crystallography prior to attending the course. Given enough interest, an optional introductory review will be offered on Monday, June 1.

Epitaxy and Promises
Scope
Epitaxy allows nowadays the usual growth of nanostructures with unique properties. The control of their growth at the finest level is a challenge in achieving new systems. It involves both the understanding of the growth mechanisms together with the knowledge of the properties of materials at the nanoscale. It is a domain where both fundamental research and industrial issues are closely entangled.
This summer school is aimed at giving to Ph-D students, young but also senior scientists, an up-to-date overview on the epitaxy of semi-conductors. The basic growth mechanisms will be presented with an emphasis on the new developments in this understanding. The control of the growth using patterns, selective growth or new geometries such as nanomembranes, nanowires or sheets, will be reviewed. The properties of the epitaxial systems, already explored or expected, will be given both theoretically and experimentally with a description of the characterization techniques. The school will give the opportunity to review the most important achievements in practical applications of epitaxial nanostructures. A particular attention will be given to new trends and pioneering directions, as well as to new materials and devices.

The workshop has been designed for postgraduate, postdoctoral and research scientists that deal with macromolecular crystallography but need further knowledge on the routine uses and fundamentals that underlie the modern techniques for macromolecular crystallography. The topics will cover crystallographic computing and fundamentals using XDS, CCP4 and Phenix, as well as the state of the art on topics such as the strategies for protein production, phasing with ARCCIMBOLDO, SHELX and SIR2014, modeling with COOT and low resolution techniques. MCS2015 will provide five days and a half of lectures and workshops. The course is designed for 25 highly motivated students.

Minischool on Biophysics of Protein Interactions

The proposed school will compare and creatively confront different modern approaches to highly charged, structured, and disordered Coulomb systems. Its primary purpose will be to merge the different theoretical, experimental and simulation approaches in order to progress towards a unified description of the electrostatic interactions in soft- and bio-matter. An overview of approximate analytical theories as well as sophisticated simulations will put the students in contact with the state-of-the art research in biophysics and will allow them to build connections between these different theoretical approaches, as well as with the available experimental data.
Besides a poster session, attendants will be also invited to give short talks about their research activity. This school is aimed at graduate students and researchers in the fields of statistical mechanics, materials science, biophysics and nanobiotechnology. There is no registration fee and limited funds are available for travel and local expenses.
This school will be preceded on Sunday March 8 by a one-day minicourse by Prof. Jose Nelson Onochic (Rice University) on Energy Landscapes in Biophysics.
