2018 Winter School of Cryo-EM Workshop

We are pleased to announce the Cryo-EM Workshop of the High-Resolution TEM
Winter School, which will be held on January 3-5, 2018 at Arizona State
University (ASU) Tempe campus. The HRTEM Winter School at ASU has a long
history in educating and training TEM scientists, and we have been
expanding our interests and courses to the biological applications,
especially the cryo-EM methods. Last year was our first annual cryo-EM
workshop, which brought success in promoting biological cryo-EM and
training more researchers into the field.
The goal of the Cryo-EM Workshop is to introduce the concepts and
applications of the biological cryo-EM. We will have two guest speakers
coming to join our workshop: Dr. Nikolaus Grigorieff (Howard Hughes Medical
Institute) and Dr. James Evans (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory).
Participants will learn the complete workflow and advanced techniques used
for biological cryo-EM through lectures, demos, and hands-on experiments.
No previous experience is required. Also, it will be a great opportunity
for the participants to learn the cryo-EM principles while working along
with their samples. Therefore, this year we are welcoming to receive the
proposals from who are interested in bringing their samples and processing
their data on site.
Workshop on single-particle cryo-EM and tomography

cryoEM or those who are planning to use cryoEM to bring their projects to the
next level.
It will comprise a series of lectures covering all steps of Single-particle
cryoEM and Subtomogram Averaging (from sample preparation to data
collection and image processing). Practical sessions will give the students
the opportunity to perform image processing for both single particle and
subtomogram averaging.
3rd International Symposium on Cryo-3D Image Analysis

We are pleased to announce the 3rd International Conference on Three-dimensional Cryo-EM Image Analysis to be held March 21-24, 2018 at Granlibakken Conference Center, Lake Tahoe, California. The 2018 Symposium builds on our very successful previous meetings on the same theme in 2014 and 2016.
The goal of this Symposium Series is to discuss state of the art image analysis approaches and algorithm developments to tackle challenging biological problems and to identify current limitations in the field. We have recruited an outstanding panel of speakers.Â
The topics for this year's symposium are:

CCP-EM Dynamo workshop

A two day workshop on the subtomogram averaging software Dynamo led by the developer Daniel Castaño-DÃez (University of Basel).Â
The workshop will provide hands-on training on all practical aspects of subtomogram averaging, encompassing all stages of the pipeline: tomogram visualization and archiving, particle picking techniques for different geometries, averaging, refinement and classification. No previous experience is required, and participants are welcome and encouraged to bring their own data sets.
Third SPHIRE workshop

The third SPHIRE workshopis to be held at Rice University Houston, TX. The workshop is free, but limited to 35 participants.
The target audience includes graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff. This workshop will provide intensive hands-on-training in all practical aspects of single particle cryo-EM image processing using SPHIRE.
All stages of the SPHIRE pipeline will be covered, including:
- Micrograph movie alignment
- CTF estimation
- 2D classification
- 3D initial model generation
- High-resolution 3D refinement
- 3D focused classification and heterogeneity analysis
The participants are requested to bring their own Linux/Mac or Windows laptops.
The registration deadline is at September 27, 2017.

On July 6th and 7th, the European Photon & Neutron Campus in Grenoble will host a unique CRYO-EM Symposium in the framework of the newly established cryo-EM platform. The new facility will be open to the user community based on peer-review of scientific merit and technical feasibility. Scientists from ESRF, IBS and EMBL will support user operation.

The workshop will be held at the Research Center Caesar in the framework of the 6th International Caesar Conference: Overcoming barriers - Atomic-resolution and beyond: advances in molecular electron microscopy (12-15th Sept. 2017).
The workshop is exclusive to registered participants of the conference, but provided at no additional costs. The target audience includes graduate students, faculty and staff.
This workshop will provide intensive hands-on-training in all practical aspects of single particle cryo-EM image processing using SPHIRE.
All stages of the SPHIRE pipeline will be covered, including:
- Micrograph movie alignment
- CTF estimation
- 2D classification
- 3D starting model generation
- High-resolution 3D refinement
- 3D focused classification and heterogeneity analysis
Registrations to the workshop will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis, however limiting participants to one per group/department. Confirmation letters will be sent latest beginning of August.
The workshop is limited to 20 attendees. Computing hardware will be provided in place.

FFEA Workshop

This will be a hands-on workshop on the new software tool Fluctuating Finite Element Analysis (FFEA), which calculates dynamic trajectories for flexible biomolecules directly from cryo-EM/ET density maps. FFEA aims to provide an equivalent simulation tool for the EMDB as atomistic MD simulations have for the PDB. This approach uniquely uses volumetric meshes rather than atomistic co-ordinates as input such that it can model protein dynamics, protein-protein interactions, conformational switching between known configurational states and can be mapped back to atomistic co-ordinates, where these are available. This workshop is ideal for biomolecular simulators who would like to make full use of cryo-EM data in their modelling, or for experimentalists who would like to gain new theoretical insight into the dynamic behaviour of the structures they observe.

6th International caesar Conference. Overcoming Barriers: Atomic-resolution and beyond: advances in molecular electron microscopy.

The 6th International caesar Conference presents leading research in molecular electron microscopy of dynamic biological entities.
The conference focuses on recent technological as well as methodological advances and their applications to fundamental biological questions.
Prior to the conference, there is a workshop (Monday & Tuesday, Sept. 11-12) on molecular Cryo-EM. The workshop covers both tomographic as well as single-particle techniques and is free of charge for registered conference participants. It aims at graduate students and (junior) postdocs.
