Nanoscale Spintronics with Magnons, Phonons, and Photons
Spintronics is a leading contender for future nano-scale, "beyond Moore", data storage, processing, and transmission technologies. In particular, magnetism-based spintronics has enormous largely unexplored potential given its two particular features: (i) the extreme robustness of the magnetic order parameter against elevated temperatures and nanoscale confinement, and, (ii) the power-efficient spin-torque manipulation of the magnetic order by electric currents. As researchers are probing deeper into the spin dynamics of nanostructures, new physics and associated functionalities are being discovered at a dazzling pace. The 2nd Gordon Research Conference and 1st Gordon Research Seminar on "Spin Dynamics in Nanostructures" will provide an important stage for the main players in the field (and those who want to joint them) to present and discuss new results and future plans, in theory, computation, simulation, and experiments.
The conference will touch many issues of modern spintronics and magnetism that challenge conventional wisdom. Magnetism occurs in metals and insulators, in the form of ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic ground states, all with specific dynamical properties. Elementary spin wave excitations (magnons) can be excited and controlled by external stimuli such as magnetic fields, heating, electric currents, light (photons) and sound (phonons). The magnetization field may contain topological defects such as domain walls, vortices, and skyrmions that are especially susceptible to perturbations. The spin-orbit interaction is an essential ingredient to access, excite and stabilize magnetic textures and their dynamics. As structures approach the nanometer scale, new challenges arise due to the increased role of internal interfaces and contacts to the outside world and novel emerging quantum effects. Moreover, studies on the femtosecond to picosecond time-scales provide insights into regimes which defy established wisdom.
We invite starting and expert researchers from academia and industry with backgrounds in experiment, theory, and computation of magnetism, optics, mechanics, electronics and thermoelectrics to participate in these meetings. The goal of these meetings is to exchange ideas and to discuss the most recent progress and most challenging problems. Of special welcome are junior scientists working on or interested in the field. At the preceding 1st Gordon Research Seminar in magnetism they will receive briefings from leading researchers as well as present and extensively discuss their work among themselves in order to maximally profit from the subsequent conference.

About the Workshop
We are proud to announce that the International Workshop on Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Exotic Spin Structures (DMI 2015) will take place in Pskov, Russia on May 26 â€" 29, 2015. The III International Workshop DMI 2015, hosted by the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI), follows two previous meetings held in Saint Petersburg (2011) and Veliky Novgorod (2013). DMI 2015 is intended for researchers working in the field of the structural and magnetic properties of noncentrosymmetric crystals and artificial nanostructures. The objective of the workshop is to serve as a platform for scientific discussion and exchange of ideas among the scientists willing to share their research findings as well as to review and discuss the recent progress, developments and advances in DMI and chiral magnetism.
Scientific scope
The workshop will include the application of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) to the following areas:
- cubic ferromagnets without center of symmetry;
- antiferromagnets without center of symmetry;
- nanostructures at the surfaces and interfaces;
- weak ferromagnetism.
DMI 2015 will present invited talks, oral reports and poster presentations.

The aim of the School is to bring together experts and young scientists interested in exploiting the anomalous signal from light atoms (e.g. S, P, Ca, K, Mg) native to the protein or crystal for macromolecular structure determination using soft (wavelengths > 1.5Ã...) SAD Theory & Historical Perspectives These lectures will address the theoretical aspects of overcoming the phase problem in using SAD and S-SAD data and highlight the historical perspectives of two initial de novo structures solved by S-SAD.Source/Beamline Considerations These lectures and Case Studies will cover the optimization of the experiment setup in terms of the hardware, choice of wavelength and other source specific parameters.
Data Collection Strategies This lecture will cover techniques and problems associated with collecting sulfur-SAD data including crystal centering, data collection setup and methods used to increase the anomalous scattering signal to noise ratio in the data. The lecture will highlight common areas where problems can occur and suggest how best to eliminate them.
Data Reduction Theory and Strategies These lectures and Case Studies will focus on the data reduction process (indexing, integration and scaling) using several popular data reduction programs as examples, highlighting critical program input parameters and program output. The lecture will highlight common areas where problems can occur and suggest how best to eliminate them. New methods such as Multi-Crystal and Single Crystal Multi-dataset averaging will be described.
Anomalous Substructure Determination & Phasing This lecture and Case Study will describe the use of SHELXCDE [9] and HKL2MAP to determine the anomalous scattering substructure, the correct handedness of the anomalous scattering substructure, the generation of initial protein phases and interpreting the quality of the resulting electron density map.

Crystallography for the next generation: the legacy of IYCr

In keeping with our desire to continue many of the initiatives undertaken this past year, the IUCr have decided to hold an "IYCr legacy" conference in lieu of a "Closing" ceremony for the International Year of Crystallography. This conference is aimed at reviewing all the activities associated with IYCr - all that has been (and is being) done, what was successful, what was not so successful, etc. - and discussing how to transform the activities into long-term sustainable actions.
The conference, entitled "Crystallography for the next generation: the legacy of IYCr", will focus on the achievements and problems encountered during IYCr2014 in order to determine which initiatives will be worth transforming into sustainable long-term actions with benefits for the crystallographic community. Therefore, sessions will be scheduled about:
- OpenLabs (including the IUCr initiative in Africa) for 2015 and beyond, with contributions from University rectors, professors and students who attended them and from the companies that partnered the initiative during IYCr2014;
- outcomes of the Summit meetings, to see what is going on in the three targeted regions and what to do next;
- the development of the crystallographic community, where representatives of the new countries that are starting activities in the field will be invited to describe their local situations and possibilities for international cooperation, in conjunction with the IUCr Regional Associates (ACA, AsCA, ECA, LACA);
- joint programmes between the IUCr and the large-scale facilities (e.g. Cheiron school, agreements for future partnerships, SESAME);
- crystallographic education programmes (activities for schoolchildren; new educational resources; links to educational activities of related disciplines; school and academic curricula);
- crystallography and industry (connections; opportunities for the community);
- IUCr journals and other activities of the Union (recent developments and new policies).
Practical X-ray course on methods in protein crystallography: data collection, data processing, and phasing

The course is supported by Biostruct-X, Biocenter Oulu, and the University of Oulu
There will be an international X-ray course at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine of the University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland. The course will focus on data collection and data processing using iMOSFLM and XDS, to be complemented by lectures and tutorials on experimental phasing (SHELX) and molecular replacement phasing (CCP4). In addition there will be lectures on new techniques (XFEL diffraction and neutron crystallography). On the last day of the course there will be a remote data collection demonstration at Diamond Light Source, Oxford. The outline of the course follows the previous format, aiming for approximately 16-20 students, who will be provided with a computer in our linux class room. Data collection from own crystals will be possible using our in-house Bruker microfocus X-ray generator or remotely at Diamond.

Throughout the course students will have time to work on their own topics in the linux class room and we will also provide the opportunity to collect data with our own equipment. Crystals that should be used for data collection in house or at Diamond should be available for freezing on the first day of the course or should be sent in advance to Oulu.
There will be a registration fee of 350Euro to cover the costs of accommodation and meals. We will try to make available fellowships to cover these costs. When applying to attend this course follow the instructions attached below.  Please provide information on crystals and/or datasets that you would like to send in advance. Indicate also if such a fellowship is needed when being accepted for this course. In case of oversubscription, students with own crystals and / or own data sets will be prioritised.

ABBIX Early Science Workshop

The workshop will consist of both plenary and parallel sessions. The plenary session will begin with presentations on science topics in research fields that the beamlines are designed to address, followed by facility presentations to update the community about the early scientific capabilities at the suite of ABBIX beamlines and, in addition, of the Life Science and Biomedical Technology Research Resource (LSBR), sponsored by the NIH and the Department of Energy Office of Biological and Environmental Research (DOE BER). Two parallel sessions on Wednesday afternoon will focus on MX and X-ray scattering, consisting mainly of presentations that will address specific opportunities in these areas. These will be followed by two more parallel sessions on Thursday morning, also focusing on MX and X-ray scattering, consisting mainly of contributions. If you wish to give a contributed presentation during one of the parallel sessions, please submit an abstract.
The parallel sessions are designed to provide forums to facilitate more detailed discussions about potential first experiments at specific beamlines and the formation of the experiment teams. Specifically, each parallel session group will be charged to:  ​​​​​​​​​​
- ​​​Identify key research projects and the associated first experiments that may be performed at the suite of ABBIX beamlines, emphasizing those projects that will take advantage of NSLS-II properties and ABBIX beamline capabilities.
- Facilitate the formation of research teams to generate first experiment proposals for submission.
- Identify key additional team members in such areas as theory and analysis, ancillary measurements, and specimen preparation, needed to achieve the research goals.

The Eighth Workshop on Structural Analysis of Aperiodic Crystals

The 8th Workshop on Structural Analysis of Aperiodic Crystals continues a series of workshops on the structure determination of incommensurate crystals at the University of Bayreuth. An overview will be provided of the methods of structural analysis of incommensurately modulated crystals and composite crystals. Lectures will cover the basic principles of the superspace approach as well as recent developments on modulation functions and charge flipping.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice structural analysis in superspace with the computer programs Superflip and JANA2006 (written by V. Petricek, M. Dusek and L. Palatinus, Prague). A step-by-step tutorial will guide you through structure determination, symmetry analysis, structure refinement and t-plots for crystal-chemical analysis of selected examples of modulated structures and composite crystals. Your own data sets will be welcome, too.
The number of participants will be limited to 30.

BioStruct-X Industrial Workshop

BioStruct-X (www.biostruct-x.eu) is an integrated project funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission for transnational access to biological synchrotron X-ray radiation facilities. The BioStruct-X consortium coordinated by EMBL-Hamburg has 19 partners from 11 EU member and associated states providing integrated access via 42 installations in four key areas: macromolecular X-ray crystallography, small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray imaging, protein production and high-throughput crystallisation. In addition to the transnational access, BioStruct-X partners are involved in joint research activities aimed at novel developments in synchrotron instrumentation, automation of the experiment and high-throughput software services.
The X-ray based structural biology activities supported in BioStruct-X are core technologies used in many pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The workshop will promote the exchange of knowledge and approaches, either available or being established, between BioStruct-X consortium and industrial partners.
The Workshop will take place at the premises of the DESY synchrotron facility in Hamburg operating the presently world brightest storage ring PETRA III. A tour to the biological beamlines running at PETRA III will be included in the program. There will be a poster session and ample advertizing possibilities for the companies.
DSE2015. 100 Years of the Debye Scattering Equation

A workshop dedicated to the centenary of the publication of P. Debye’s paper on «Zerstreuung von Röntgenstrahlen» (Feb. 25th, 1915), which first provided an expression for the diffraction from a randomly oriented powder of scatterers.Â
Over the past twenty years, the rising interest in nanomaterials, and the ever growing power and availability of computers has revived interest in the Debye Scattering Equation (DSE), which is now a paradigm in the analysis of the matter at the nanoscale. Besides and beyond the DSE, stemming from the same root, Total Scattering methods have grown steadily, gaining increasingly popularity with the Pair Distribution Function (PDF) approach. The common root is in the description of scattering based on atomic distances in clusters of atoms/molecules and nanoparticles, as an alternative to the concept of unit cell and translational symmetry of the traditional crystallography for ideal bulk crystals.
This workshop is dedicated to DSE history, methodology, new ideas and representative applications, with further interest in PDF and Total Scattering methods to study matter at the atomic scale independently of its degree of order, be it amorphous, nanocrystalline or simply a disordered crystal.
As a focused and intensive workshop DSE2015 is limited to 50 participants. Besides a restricted number of invited speakers, admission to the workshop is conditioned by the acceptance of an abstract; as an alternative to an abstract, a motivation letter can also be presented. Admission is decided (no appeal) by the Scientific Committee (Billinge-Cervellino-Neder-Scardi). Title and abstract submitted at this stage can then be modified if/when necessary before the workshop.
The program, distributed over four days, provides for a single session with extended time for discussion after keynote and contributed talks. A half-day session is dedicated to Poster presentations.
The choice of a limited and selected participation and the location in a comfortable resort nearby a small town of the Dolomitic mountain area of Italy, are intended to promote free discussions and to foster the beginning of collaborations and projects.
Written contributions of accepted talks/posters will be considered for publication â€" after the workshop â€" in special issues of peer-reviewed (ISI-Scopus) Journals. More details to be provided soon.
