We were saddened to learn of the recent death of Dieter Schwarzenbach, Emeritus Professor at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, at the age of 88. Professor Schwarzenbach was Editor of the IUCr's flagship journal, Acta Cryst. A, from 2002 to 2011, during which time several special issues were published to increase its visibility.
