Introduction to neutron techniques for condensed matter studies, with applications to Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth sciences
The Learning Days organized by the Italian Society of Neutron Spectroscopy are addressed to degree and specializing students, PhD students, post-doc and young researchers interested in acquiring the basic principles of neutron spectroscopy, in understanding the advantages and potentialities of this technique, and in exploiting it for their research.
The eighth edition of the SISN Learning Days will take place from 13 to 22 September 2014, with subject "Introduction to neutron techniques for condensed matter studies, with applications to Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth sciences".
Two sessions
The Learning Days are characterized by two sessions. The first session provides the students with the fundamentals of neutron spectroscopy and the basic principles of data analysis. The lectures on the basic theoretical and experimental tools will be paralleled by tutorials about data analysis. During the second experimental session the students will carry out real neutron scattering measurements at the most important facility for neutron research: the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France.
The first part of the school, from 13 to 17 September will be held at Hotel Steinpent in S. Giovanni Valle Aurina (in the province of Bolzano, Italy). With favourable weather conditions, a pause day is foreseen (on Monday 15 September) during which students can take part to an excursion in the mountains organized by the school. Monday evening will instead be devoted to the presentation of the experiments foreseen in Grenoble. On Thursday 18 September students will leave S. Giovanni to reach Grenoble in the evening. The school organizes the travel to Grenoble.
The second session will take place from 19 to 22 September, with two full days of measurements. At the end of the experiments the students will present a short report, in the form of a seminar, certifying their activity during the school. A committee composed by the school directors and experimental tutors will assign a prize for the best presentation.

Mission
Modern crystallography is entering its 2nd century of life, being as vital and challenging as a young discipline. In the last decades, crystallography has experienced a rapid advance concerning not only the fundamental knowledge but also the instrumentation and the automation of software and tools for structure solution, refinement and analysis. Such innovations have produced an enormous impact towards a deeper understanding of the properties of matter and of the functionality of materials and molecular entities of all dimensions, as witnessed by well-recognized novel findings.
On the other hand, automated techniques typically discourage critical thinking and constitute a serious risk for young crystallographers, who may lose the capability of evaluating the accuracy and goodness of data and critically analysing the results. This risk has been increased by the reduction of fundamental Academic courses in crystallography all over Europe.
The ECS1 is directed to young researchers and Ph.D. students involved in different fields of structural sciences, including physics, biology, chemistry, mineralogy, materials science, cultural heritage. It aims at diffusing and sharing the idea of crystallography as a unique discipline: "crystallography is an excellent example of the universality of science", to cite the Proclamation of 2014 as International Year of Crystallography. The School will provide the students with instruments for acquiring a deep know-how and a strong background on the fundamentals of crystallography. Students will also gain consciousness of progresses, limitations and perspectives of the crystallographic theories and methods, and of how they can be adapted to the different "flavours" of structural science, ranging from small molecule to large macromolecular assemblies. The fil-rouge of the multi-faceted methods to be delivered in this School is to provide students with fundamental interpretative and predictive information and ideas for further scientific developments.
Different facets of crystallography will be explored, and expectations for research in the next century discussed and analysed through a series of reviews from renowned teachers. Such contributions will be collected in the Educational Book associated to the School, with the aim of inspiring and suggesting ideas for novel research projects in crystallography.

Exploring time, energy and length scales in condensed matter
Institut Montana, Zug, Switzerland  The PSI summer school 2014 is dedicated to the topic: Exploring time, energy and length scales in condensed matter. International experts and PSI staff members will introduce and deepen your knowledge of these scientific topics. Additionally, you will learn about the experimental methods applied at the large-scale facilities of PSI in order to understand the phenomena, presently at the forefront of modern solid state physics and chemistry.Synchrotron radiation, neutron, and muon sources are used to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Using these facilities, the focus of the school is the study of dynamic processes in nature and technology, over the full range of time and length scales at which they actually occur. The principles of the underlying experimental methods will be explained. Evening lectures will address the importance of time, energy and length scales in other scientific fields.  Following the school a practical training at PSI is offered to a limited number of participants. The training allows a hands-on experience at the beamlines of the facilities.

The twentieth annual Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS) "Summer School on Methods and Applications of Small Angle Neutorn Scattering and Neutron Reflectometry " will be held from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18, 2014 at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR). This year's summer school is devoted to methods and applications of small angle neutron scattering and neutron reflectometry. Neutron spectroscopy will not be covered.
The course is targeted at those with little or no previous experience with elastic neutron scattering methods. The combination of introductory lectures and training in scattering techniques will provide participants with a unique opportunity to become familiar with neutron scattering methods and their application to current research topics.
Attendance for the summer school is limited to 35 students and to people affiliated with US universities and US industry.
The Summer School is sponsored by the NCNR and by the National Science Foundation under the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS) cooperative agreement DMR-0944772. Support for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty may be requested on the summer school application form.
Six instruments will be featured in this years summer school, 3 SANS instruments and 3 NR instruments. The SANS instruments featured will be NG3 30 meter SANS, NG7 30 meter SANS and BT5 USANS. The NR instruments featured will be the NGD Off-Specular Reflectometer(MAGIK), NGD Polarized Beam Reflectometer/Diffractometer (PBR) and NG7 Horizontal Sample NR.

The Course on Powder Diffraction integrates the basic principles, common practices, and applications of X ray diffraction techniques for the analysis of polycrystalline samples. Particular attention will be paid at obtaining good experimental data for their appropriate use in different applications.
Three fundamental aspects constitute the core of the powder diffraction course: (1) use of X ray diffraction techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of polycrystalline materials; (2) use of the program GSAS-II (Structure refinement using the Rietveld Method); (3) Microstructure characterization (Use of the program PM2K2). These topics will be presented in the context of conventional X ray diffractometers and of synchrotron radiation.
The Invited Speakers are: Dr. Robert Von Dreele (Argonne National Laboratory, USA), Prof. James A. Kaduk (Illinois Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. Matteo Leoni (Universita degli Studi di Trento, Italy), and Prof. José Antonio Henao (Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia). Professors Asiloé J. Mora, Graciela Díaz de Delgado, Belkis Ramírez, Gerzon Delgado, and Miguel Delgado (ULA, Venezuela) and Dr. Alexander Briceño (IVIC, Venezuela) will also be instructors.

ISSRNS is a series of meetings, organised every two years, devoted to recent advances and new techniques employing synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine.
The 12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science (ISSRNS 2014) will be organized by Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society (PTPS) in cooperation with two Polish institutions, the Institute of Physics, of the Polish Academy of Sciences, (Warsaw) and National Centre for Nuclear Physics, (Otwock/Świerk) from 15th to  20th of June 2014 in Warsaw (Poland).  ISSRNS is a traditional forum for discussing fundamental issues of application of the synchrotron radiation and related methods in natural sciences. This first school will provide theoretical and applied approaches to training  used in structural biology (diffraction and X-ray scattering, NMR, cryo-microscopy, molecular and cellular imaging, macromolecular interactions). The school will focus on the integration of many of these methods to answer the great questions of the functional biology at the cellular level. Diseases, from bacterial and viral infections to cancer to chronic maladies, are still among the greatest problems for mankind, in spite of tremendous progress in genetics, biology, and chemistry. Â Approaches to developing new treatments have changed over time, and so have the methodologies used, in order to solve the varied, new, challenging problems that may happen on the path to drug discovery. Â Together with ever-evolving experimental techniques, a variety of computational approaches have been applied at the various stages of the drug design process, and in the past two decades structure-based drug design has become one of the mainstream approaches. Â This method can be used to target protein-ligand and protein-protein interactions and nowadays is applicable to all aspects of drug discovery, including lead identification, lead optimization, ADMET prediction, and drug repurposing.Â
The purpose of the course is dual:1) It will provide a review of the fundamentals and the application of crystallography to drug design, and an evaluation of the technology at the present state.
2) It will review the progress in this field and summarize the application and results to current fields of interest. Â
In addition to lectures, there will be hands-on workshops providing training in using modern computer programs.

MDANSE2014 School - Molecular Dynamics (and Lattice Dynamics) to Analyse Neutron Scattering Experiments

MDANSE school 2014: Molecular Dynamics to Analyse Neutron Scattering Experiments
This school aims to train the participants in the use of modern simulation tools in the context of analyzing and interpreting experimental, neutron scattering data. It will be focused mainly on practical training, so the number of participants is limited to 30. Taking into account the QENS2014 and WINS 2014 conferences in the nearby location of Autrans from May 11 to May 16 (http://www.ill.eu/news-events/events/qens-2014-wins-2014/), the school will be a satellite event. Therefore the school will be focused on the use of Molecular Dynamics simulations to explore diffusive processes on the time scales covered by quasielastic neutron scattering spectrometers and Lattice Dynamics to study phonon dispersion curves and vibrational densities of states that are typically measured with inelastic neutron scattering spectrometers. Â The goal of this school is therefore to show how widely-available simulation tools can be applied to the analysis and interpretation of neutron scattering data. The school will last 2 days and will concern mainly the practical aspects of running and analyzing simulations so that, firstly, numerical and experimental data can be directly compared and, secondly, simulations can then be investigated in atomic detail. A range of simulation codes allowing electronically complex materials, molecular and polymer systems, porous media and bio-molecules to be handled, will be made available to participants on the cluster at ILL. Simulation analysis will focus on using the nMoldyn code. McStas will be used to incorporate the instrument response in a virtual experiment. Model analysis and fitting tools applicable both to simulated and experimental data will also be presented. Lectures on the fundamental aspects of running and analyzing simulations will be complemented by hands-on tutorials.

The School Francesco Paolo Ricci is an international school, established in 1994, providing a comprehensive training in the fundamental concepts of neutron scattering.The school provides an excellent introduction to neutron scattering which is developed through to its application in contemporary research. It consists mainly of lectures and tutorials covering both the theory and technical aspects of neutron scattering with a particular emphasis on applications to Cultural Heritage. In addition to lectures on theory, sources, and neutron instrumentation, students will be tutored by world leading experts in the various scattering techniques including diffraction, quasi-elastic and inelastic scattering, imaging, small-angle scattering, reflectometry, and neutron-spin-echo.
The XII edition of the School will be held at the ETTORE MAJORANA FOUNDATION AND CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC CULTURE (EMCSC) Â as a Course within the International School of Solid State Physics (Director: Giorgio Benedek).
