5 days training on the aspect of Combined Analysis by X-ray and Neutron Scattering and introduction to the MAUD software
The objectives of this workshop is to provide students and researchers (academic or not) the required knowledge to characterize structure, microstructure, phase, texture, stress and reflectivity by “Combined Analysis using X-ray and neutron scattering techniques“. This will be treated from several case samples including: thin films and bulk materials, anisotropic and/or polyphased materials, nanomaterials, diverse experimental arrangements including multi-detectors, etc.
Each type of analysis will be considered individually and then integrated into the combined analysis software MAUD. Some specific examples will be studied using X-ray and neutron experimental data. Full afternoons are dedicated to training.Â
To support the theory and add a practical dimension to this workshop, technical aspects will be demonstrated on CRISMAT laboratory and INEL X-ray instruments. Â
This workshop is the best opportunity to come and meet people from various fields and exchange on technical interests and experiences.

General Information
The unique potential of neutron scattering in structural biology arises from the strong interaction of neutrons with hydrogen (H) and its deuterium (D) isotope. This property makes the information available from neutron scattering unique and a valuable complement to data obtained from other structural techniques. Individual hydrogen/deuterium atoms are visualized in neutron density maps from crystallographic data at the resolution typical of most protein structures (2.0 -2.5 Ã...).Using H/D exchange  and contrast variation, proteins and nucleic acids are sequentially modeled and mapped in large biological complexes using small angle neutron scattering, protein-membrane interactions are revealed using Reflectometry and protein and water dynamics measured using spectroscopy.The workshop includes a symposium, lectures and tutorials and tours of the High Flux Isotope reactor and Spallation Neutron Source, the world’s leading neutron research facilities.
The workshop is designed for graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty with knowledge of protein function and structure but no or limited experience of neutron sciences.

QENS 2014
QENS2014 aims to highlight topical scientific activities in the investigation of the dynamics of matter using quasi-elastic neutron scattering and to envision new applications. For neutron users it is the ideal showcase for their research. Newcomers will get a good overview over the scientific potential via contact with experts in the field. The conference program will take account of the increasing need for computer simulation and for theory support in data interpretation and will place QENS in the context of complementary techniques.ÂQENS science covers a wide area, from fundamental questions to relevant societal challenges, ranging from life sciences or future energy sources. The focus is the need to unravel dynamic and relaxation behavior in addition the structure. The following keywords give an impression of themes covered at QENS2014:

WINS 2014
The aim of the workshop is to overview recent developments, forthcoming projects and practice of inelastic & quasi-elastic neutron spectrometers. Related issues such as development of data analysis software, auxiliary devices and outlook for future scientific efforts will be also of concern. We’ll put a particular focus on comparison of dynamics in single crystals investigated using TAS and T-o-F.ÂThe themes for presentations will include:
- Neutron spectrometers: design and simulations, novel ideas
- Devices and auxiliary equipment: polarization, magnetic field, pressure
- Software for data acquisition, analysis and instrument simulation.

MDANSE school 2014: Molecular Dynamics to Analyse Neutron Scattering Experiments
This school aims to train the participants in the use of modern simulation tools in the context of analyzing and interpreting experimental, neutron scattering data. It will be focused mainly on practical training, so the number of participants is limited to 30. Taking into account the QENS2014 and WINS 2014 conferences in the nearby location of Autrans from May 11 to May 16 (http://www.ill.eu/news-events/events/qens-2014-wins-2014/), the school will be a satellite event. Therefore the school will be focused on the use of Molecular Dynamics simulations to explore diffusive processes on the time scales covered by quasielastic neutron scattering spectrometers and Lattice Dynamics to study phonon dispersion curves and vibrational densities of states that are typically measured with inelastic neutron scattering spectrometers. Â The goal of this school is therefore to show how widely-available simulation tools can be applied to the analysis and interpretation of neutron scattering data. The school will last 2 days and will concern mainly the practical aspects of running and analyzing simulations so that, firstly, numerical and experimental data can be directly compared and, secondly, simulations can then be investigated in atomic detail. A range of simulation codes allowing electronically complex materials, molecular and polymer systems, porous media and bio-molecules to be handled, will be made available to participants on the cluster at ILL. Simulation analysis will focus on using the nMoldyn code. McStas will be used to incorporate the instrument response in a virtual experiment. Model analysis and fitting tools applicable both to simulated and experimental data will also be presented. Lectures on the fundamental aspects of running and analyzing simulations will be complemented by hands-on tutorials.

Studying Kinetics with Neutrons
March, 24-27, Grenoble, FranceThe study of kinetic processes is a growing field in modern science extending from physicsvia chemistry to biology. Neutrons are known to be extremely versatile probes for the investigation of structure and dynamics in condensed matter. The advent of new high intensity neutron sources and instruments, as well as the development of new real-time techniques, allows for the tracking of transformation processes in condensed matter on a microscopic scale. The evolution of structural details can be studied by time-resolved neutron scattering over a broad range of times. For example, new stroboscopic methods such as TISANE allow dynamic processes to be studied on a time scale extended to microseconds.Â
The scope of this third SKIN symposium is to bring together scientists from different fields of physics, chemistry, biology, materials and geo-sciences with neutron experts. The meeting will be focussed on results, new applications and future prospects for time-resolved neutron Small Angle Neutron Scattering and Neutron Reflectometry. It is an important aspect of the meeting to see what other experimental techniques achieve in this field and where theoreticians see future challenges.

A Practical Introduction to Neutron Scattering
The Berlin Neutron School is one of the oldest established neutron schools. It was founded in 1980 by Prof Hans Dachs and is organised by the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB). The aim of the school is to provide an introduction to neutron scattering with an emphasis on hands-on, practical experience using the instruments at the BERII reactor.The first three days of the school consist of detailed lectures on the principles and techniques of neutron scattering followed by a tour of the instruments and an introduction to sample environment. As well as the course lectures given by members of HZB, external guest lecturers will be invited to review current issues in the field of neutron research. In the past, Prof Michael Steiner (ENSA) discussed the future of neutron sources in Europe and Dr Andrea Denker (HZB) has lectured on neutron auto-radiography of paintings and artifacts.
After attending the lectures the students begin the hands-on experiments. They are divided into groups of four to five people from similar subject areas and do triple-axis spectroscopy, powder diffraction, small angle scattering, reflectometry, time-of-flight spectroscopy, tomography and residual stress analysis under the guidance of the instrument scientists. The experiments last three hours each and take place over three and a half days. On the penultimate day we will hold a students´ poster session which will give the students the opportunity to present their work and discuss with the HZB scientists how neutron scattering could benefit their research. The poster session will be followed by the Neutron School dinner. Finally, on the last day of the school the students will attend lectures on how to use neutron scattering as a tool for research in various subject areas e.g. biology, chemistry, engineering and physics, and how to apply for neutron beamtime at HZB.
This school is primarily aimed at advanced students who have completed their Bachelor degree in physical, engineering and life sciences, and early stage researchers e.g. PhD students and postdocs. The course is part of the curriculum of the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences at the Technical University Berlin.

Since its first session, in 1991, HERCULES has displayed a number of features that differentiate these courses from the rest: i.e. simultaneous training in neutron and synchrotron radiation science for about 75 participants over several weeks, multidisciplinarity, lectures and tutorials given by highly qualified international specialists, and a substantial fraction of the programme devoted to practical sessions carried out on cutting edge instruments, at European Large Facilities partner institutes.Â
