2021 Birkbeck/EMBO course: Image processing for cryo-electron microscopy

The aim of the course is to provide in-depth understanding of theory and practice in cryo-EM image processing, covering basic topics such as Fourier Transforms, image formation and CTF, to more advanced ones such as Bayesian methods, subtomogram averaging, postprocessing, high resolution refinement and atomic model building.
A series of pre-recorded lectures will be provided to watch in advance, and during the course there will be live video Q&A sessions with the experts. These will be followed by practicals on a wide range of commonly used software. The practicals will mainly be led by the software developers, giving a unique chance to understand in depth the ?black boxes?. In addition, we will have exciting live sessions and social interactions. We will only be able to take a very limited number of applicants, who will be selected based on a series of required criteria: skills and motivation: - some existing level of exposure to cryo-EM - basic familiarity with linux/command line operation - a commitment to continuing work with cryo-EM and to spreading the knowledge locally. technical requirements: - a fast and stable internet connection - ideally two monitors (or one plus a tablet: practicals will run on parallel guacamole and zoom sessions) Applications will only be open for a short time (closing in early July); we are sending this message now so that you can gather all the necessary documents in advance. The application form will require a cover letter, a CV, and a letter of recommendation from your supervisor. Please make sure it is clear in these documents how you meet the above criteria. We will take participants from PhD level up, and we ask that only one application is sent from any institution.

The meeting will be held remotely on a virtual event platform over two afternoons, and will include a series of invited and selected talks, interactive virtual posters, and interactive virtual lounges.

This one month course, coordinated by the Université Grenoble Alpes, is designed to provide training for students, postdoctoral and senior scientists from European and non-European universities and laboratories, in the field of Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for condensed matter studies (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Geosciences, Industrial applications). It includes lectures, practicals and tutorials, visits of Large Facilities and a poster session (each participant puts up a poster about her/his thesis or research topic for a day).
- PART I:Â BASIC METHODS AND INSTRUMENTSÂ :
(This part is common for all the participants - 1.5 weeks) - PART II is divided into two parallel specialized sessions (3.5 weeks) :

School on Advanced Light Sources: Principles, Methods and Multidisciplinary Applications | (smr 3439)

The School targets young scientists to introduce them to the exceptional research opportunities offered by synchrotron and free-electron-laser (FEL) facilities worldwide for exploring the properties of all types of matter.
The school will provide an overview of the production and characteristics of synchrotron and free-electron-laser light, its interaction with matter and the numerous experimental methods enabled by these interactions that have become indispensable tools spanning over all domains of basic and applied research. The school lecturers will demonstrate the multidisciplinary applications and the most recent instrumental developments and science breakthroughs in the fields relevant to their expertise. The program will also include discussions of the lecturers with the students, talks describing the open access to these facilities based on the merits of the proposed project and possible industrial application. Demonstration sessions will be organized at the beamlines of Elettra's synchrotron and FEL facilities.

This workshop will include all steps of image reconstruction and the practical use of software for single particle image reconstruction available under Scipion. This workshop will consist of three days of lectures and hands-on training sessions led by Profs. David DeRosier, Jose Maria Carazo, Georgios Skiniotis and colleagues. The practical sessions will be conducted via cloud computing accounts and is only available on-site to a limited number of participants. Zoom teleconferencing will be available for the lectures and demonstration of the practical material but will not have a practical participation option.
There is no fee for this workshop.

Dynamo Workshop for Subtomogram Averaging

The workshop will provide hands-on training on all practical aspects of subtomogram averaging, encompassing all stages of the pipeline: tomogram visualization and archiving, particle picking in different geometries, averaging, refinement and classification. In addition to these core contents on subtomo processing, this year we will conduct a longer workshop, covering also generic data analysis tasks in cryo electron tomography, as alignment of tilt series, tomogram reconstruction, advanced scripting and management of large data sets.
No previous experience is required and participants of all levels are welcome and strongly encouraged to bring along their own data. Computing infrastructure for intense numerical experiments will be provided in place, including guidance for the use of GPUs in the Amazon cloud computing services.
The registration fee is 280 CHF (accommodation is not included), deadline is July the 6th. As we can only provide a limited number of workstations, we typically accept participants on a "first come - first serve? basis. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any questions.

Advanced Diffraction Techniques for Biology

In EPN campus, Grenoble
The first workshop on Advanced Diffraction Techniques for Biology will take place at the EPN campus at Grenoble, France. The course will cover X-rays, neutrons and electrons diffraction by crystals of biological macromolecules. Various techniques will be investigated:
- Macromolecular crystal growth
- In situ (in plate) X-ray diffraction
- Serial X-ray crystallography
- Time-resolved X-ray crystallography
- Neutron diffraction
- Electron diffraction of nano-crystals
with the aim of solving /de novo/ structures, searching ligands, elucidating reaction mechanisms...

Progress in instrumentation for X-ray diffraction and CryoEM

This satellite meeting will present an overview of a wide range of new
laboratory instrumentation available from different companies, as well
as new developments at several large scale facilities. The meeting will
cover information on the newest laboratory instruments from Bruker and
Rigaku as well as on new instrumental solutions such as the Lyncean
Compact Light Source (CLS) and Sigrey’s newest X-ray sources and optics,
and focus on bringing world-class structural and analytical synchrotron
type capabilities back to our labs. We will have sessions focused on new
photon sources to be installed at major European synchrotrons as well as
X-ray Free Electron Laser facilities including ESRF, DESY, MAXIV, and
the Swiss and European X-FELs.
The organisers are also particularly proud to advertise some of the
first experimental results taken at European X-FEL. The program of this
satellite will also be complemented by news from the neutron ISIS
facility and from the cryo-EM equipment producers to provide a forum to
discuss the future of instrumentation for X-ray, neutron diffraction and
CryoEM.
