This immersive course is an outstanding place to learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of Macromolecular Crystallography because of the extensive lectures from world-renowned teachers, which are combined with hands-on experiments. This 2021 course will be lead by Jim Pflugrath (Rigaku, ret.), Tassos Perrakis (NKI), Paul Adams (LBL), Janet Newman (CSIRO; likely remote)), Tom Peat (CSIRO; likely remote) and an All-Star cast of lecturers. Attendees can expect to participate in a course that is unparalleled in the world, with experts each devoting several days to teaching the fundamentals, theory and practical considerations of crystallographic structure solution.
Topics to be covered include
- Basic diffraction theory
- Crystallization (proteins, nucleic acids, complexes and membrane proteins)
- Synchrotron X-ray sources and optics
- Data collection and processing
- Structure solution by experimental phasing methods (SAD, MAD, MIR, and others) and molecular replacement

- Model building and refinement
- Structure validation
- Coordinate deposition
- Structure presentation

Simons Electron Microscopy Center New York Structural Biology Center, New York, NY Over the past 20 years, data collection for cryoEM has become highly automated. However, most data collection sessions still require operator oversight to obtain the highest quality data. This goal of this workshop is to address next generation data collection strategies that integrate machine learning and real-time processing to reduce or eliminate the need for operator intervention. We invite applications to participate in this workshop which will take place in-person in New York, NY.

AIM The aim is to provide expert overview about different platforms for recombinant protein productions and purification strategies for crystallography techniques. Overcoming low yield expression, misfolded proteins and difficulties in purifying stable functional proteins are among the most common bottlenecks delaying structural characterization. We invite scientists to introduce their best practices in these subjects in order to provide greater knowledge and knowledge transfer on how best to deal with these challenges.

An overview of structural biology research in the European Research Area will be presented by Prof. Anastassis Perrakis, Prof. Sir David Stuart, Prof. Harald Schwalbe, Dr Andreas Holtel and Prof. Yannis Ioannidis followed by *open discussion to stimulate the engagement of key stakeholders in Structural Biology at Regional level*. The target group of the meeting is scientists from academia and industry, research administrators and decision-makers from Balkans and Southern Mediterranean countries.

he format of the workshop will be demos of the use of Phenix programs combined with slides to explain the theory. We expect an interactive meeting where attendees can ask questions for the Phenix team to answer. The workshop will cover aspects of macromolecular crystallography in Phenix, with the final emphasis based on the applicants’ research interests.
