2nd Joint AIC-SILS conference

In Florence
 An ancient tradition links the study of crystallography to this city, which during the sixteenth century saw the Medici family attracting on the banks of the Arno river Nicolas Steno, who stated the first law of crystallography. In the same period the Medici started to collect some crystalline specimens, first nucleus of one of the most precious and ancient collections of natural crystals.
The program selected by the Scientific and Organizing committees is thought to support the participation and contacts between members of the two groups involved, enabling the exchange of ideas in scientific fields (such as crystal growth, methods and techniques for structure determination, molecular recognition, polymer and material science, molecular medicine and structural biology), different and sometimes seemingly distant, but all associated with crystallography.
Thus, a hundred years after the international awards for the fundamental importance of studing matter by means of crystals, we are confident that Florence, the cradle of Renaissance ideas, will be the venue in which scientists from different fields will innovate and find stimuli for growth and collaboration.

The SCTE 2014 Conference started back in 1965 and, following a long tradition, has always been a forum where new ideas and discoveries related to the solid state chemistry and solid state physics of d- and f-Â element compounds are presented and discussed.
The conference will deal with the structure, crystal chemistry, chemical bonding and magnetic and electronic transport properties of different classes of intermetallic compounds. Hydrides, borides, carbides, silicides and homologues, pnictides, as well as chalcogenides, oxides and halides (especially those of low oxidation state exhibiting metal or semimetal properties) will also be covered.
Fundamental and applied research in the areas of solid state chemistry, physics and materials science of compounds containing d- and f- elements will be admitted.
Main topics addressed include:

The chemistry-based bottom-up nanoscience techniques evolved from colloid chemistry, a key topic in physical chemistry since the late 19th century. The major difference to classic colloid chemistry is the molecular control with which synthetic nanomaterials can be built up and investigated. This will be discussed in sessions dealing with the tailor-made synthesis of high quality nanostructured materials, the investigation of nucleation and the growth and assembly of nano-objects into complex hybride structures with advanced functionality. A strong boost in nanoscience came from the development of structural and chemical analysis techniques with atomic resolution and from the possibility to perform spectroscopic investigations and transport measurements on single nano-objects. Therefore, special sessions are devoted to topics such as the structural and electronic characterization, spectroscopy on the nanoscale, and the investigation of transport properties. Strongly correlated to these topics is the development of theoretical methods for the descriptions of such large systems with high accuracy. Furthermore, the application of nanoparticles in the life sciences, including the biological response to nanoparticles, the visualization of biological processes using specifically functionalized nanoparticles in combination with modern molecular imaging techniques will be part of the scientific program. Besides fascinating basic science, the conference will cover aspects of applications that arose in nanotechnology including high-tech materials with improved mechanical properties, novel materials for lightning, display technologies, catalysis, energy conversion and storage, as well as contrast agents and drug delivery systems for diagnosis and therapy.
Overall, nanoscience is a true transdiciplinary topic covering physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering. Since physical chemistry plays a central role in all these areas, the Bunsentagung 2014 will highlight these aspects as the main topic. Internationally outstanding scientists will give the opening and plenary lectures and progress reports on the various aspects of nanoscience and technology. Almost all of these topics will intentionally overlap with the more generic topical areas of the Bunsentagung 2014 to foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations on a leading edge level of expertise.

Magnetic Diffraction from Single Crystals at the ESS

The LLB is engaged by in-kind contribution in the design of neutron instrumentation at the European Spallation Source (ESS) Sweden, specifically for magnetic diffraction from single crystals . A strong potential is anticipated for single crystal diffraction by neutron time-of-flight Laue techniques benefiting best from the ESS pulse structure and providing new opportunities to study microscopic samples under extreme conditions, temperature, magnetic field and pressure.
The meeting is organized by the LLB and aims to evaluate the new perspectives for magnetic single crystal diffraction at the ESS. We intend to join neutron experts and potential users in the field to gather the most important scientific community needs.
The meeting (limited to 30 participants) will start at 11:00 on Monday May 26th and end at 17:00 on Tuesday May 27th. Organizers will provide lunches and coffee breaks.
Participants will have a possibility to present a 10-20 minutes talk. A considerable part of the time will be reserved for an informal discussion.

The EMAS Regional Workshops are biennial events designed to provide postgraduate-level and research workers in materials science, material engineering and related subjects, with basic knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The workshops are organised as low budget meetings with lectures on practical and theoretical aspects of EPMA given by internationally recognised experts. The format and content of the meetings are tailored to the needs of the practical microanalyst routinely dealing with problems of instrumental procedures, specimen preparation, data collection and quantification, as well as those of research workers keen to obtain a deeper understanding of the physics underlying X-ray production, measurement and analysis.Â
Molecular Modelling 2014: From biomolecules to materials

Molecular Modelling 2014: From biomolecules to materials is the next conference of the Association of Molecular Modellers of Australasia (AMMA). The conference will be held in the Gold Coast hinterland in South-East Queensland in the lush rainforest of Lamington National Park, at the O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat.
The themes of the conference will include molecular dynamics and quantum chemistry simulations of materials, methodological developments in hierarchical modelling, computer-aided drug design and cheminformatics.
The meeting will organised similarly to a Gordon Conference with presentations in the morning, late afternoon and evening but time in the middle of the day to interact with other delegates and enjoy the unique location.
The main conference will be on 31 Julyâ€"2 August 2014. The conference will be preceded by a forum for PhD students and Early-Career Researchers (ECRs) on 30 July and 31 July 2014.
Soft-Inter2014: Soft Interactions in Biological and Biominetic Self-assemblies

The main objective of the "Soft-Inter2014" school is to present a state of the art on self-assemblies and of their related concepts together with their characterization in the three disciplines, i.e. physics, chemistry and biology, in order to generate debates and communications in between scientific communities. An extremely didactic approach will be requested to the speakers, all of them being scientists involved in cross-disciplinary research of very high level. In addition, each two-hours course will be coupled to a brainstorming workshop hosted by the lecturer and a moderator of another discipline that will help in stimulating discussion. These discussions will compare the different views on the weak interactions, and help to identify purely semantic discrepancies on this adisciplinary concept.

In celebration of the International Year of Crystallography
The symposium will be the first event scientific crystallography to be held in the Northeast and brings together professionals and students working in the area of materials characterization by X-ray diffraction, electrons and neutrons, as well as other states of Brazil, involving all the major areas of knowledge that use diffraction techniques.
The theme of the symposium, 100 Years of crystallography due to the fact that the year 2014 was chosen by the International Union of Crystallography IUCr as the International Year of Crystallography (see page http://www.iycr2014.org) in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel physics prize to Max von Laue in 1914 due to his work on X-ray diffraction in crystals.The experiment performed by two collaborators (W. Friedrich and P. Knipping) in crystal Cu sulfate, idealized by von Laue, opened the way for Sir William and Sir Laurence Bragg would determine the arrangement of atoms in crystals. In a short time this acquired knowledge revolutionized besides physics and chemistry of the solid state, microbiology with the discovery of DNA structure, the development of computers and new materials, and nowadays chemical drugs for prolonging human life.
