Fundamental Characteristics and Approaches to Understand the Biological Functions of IDPs
The Gordon Research Seminar on Intrinsically Disordered Proteins is a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present and exchange new data and cutting edge ideas.
The focus of this meeting is to introduce the topic of IDPs to those just entering the field while motivating interest in key areas of IDP research. Topics covered will include: (i) what characteristics define an IDP, (ii) what experimental and computational tools can be used to study IDPs, and (iii) what roles IDPs play in vivo. The GRS will also include a career development session featuring a panel of scientists at different points in their career path who will offer career advice and answer questions on the academic job search from a variety of perspectives.

Synthesis, Characterization, Modeling, and Application
The 2014 Gordon Conference on "Noble Metal Nanoparticles" will strive to provide the same level of cutting-edge science and technology discussion that was the trademark of the 2010 and the 2012 previous two "Noble Metal Nanoparticles" conferences. The synthesis, characterization, modeling, and application of noble metal nanoparticles will be featured in the broadest possible way by creating sessions that put together chemists, physicists, material scientists, engineers, biologists, and doctors. There will be an attempt to create discussions that stem from a variety of disciplines as well as from a mixture of established and young scientists. The Conference will feature a wide range of topics, such as clusters, plasmonics, advanced characterization, assembly, biology, and a variety of applications. Some poster presenters will be selected for short talks. The atmosphere of this Conference, will be tuned to provide as many opportunities as possible for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, so to create avenues for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and discuss. A great emphasis will be placed on the presentation and discussion of unpublished, novel, and exciting results.

Forward Thinking: New Approaches, Concepts, and Paradigms Towards Understanding and Predicting EM Response
The 2014 Gordon Research Conference on Energetic Materials, and its associated Gordon Research Seminar, will present the latest fundamental science of the physics and phenomena underlying the performance of energetic materials: explosives, propellants, pyrotechnics, and thermites. Presenters and attendees are scientists and engineers associated with government laboratories, research universities, and private industry that come together from across the globe to discuss multidisciplinary fundamental research on energetic materials. Topics of discussion include theory, chemistry, material properties, and physics associated with characterization, initiation, combustion, detonation, ageing, thermal decomposition, synthesis, and sensitivity of energetic materials. The Conference will bring together a collection of investigators who are at the forefront of their field and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format at as well as meet and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with programmed discussion sessions as well as multiple opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm new concepts and paradigms while also promoting cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented.

The focus of this meeting is on the response of energetic materials at the microstructural level, which is a complex process involving both mechanical and chemical components that lends itself to a coupled experimental and computational approach. This seminar will discuss both computational and experimental efforts to understand the processes influencing the thermodynamic and constitutive response of energetic materials over multiple length scales.Â

Fan du LLB is an annual school delivered in French and offering young French-speaking researchers a first contact with real experimental neutron scattering. The school is aimed at students and post-docs working in all scientific areas where neutrons can provide valuable insights, although priority is given to those having never had any contact with neutrons scattering.
After an introduction to neutron sources and neutron scattering, ten different thematic subjects based on different scientific problems that can be addressed by neutron scattering, are proposed to the students. In groups of four to five, the students are then introduced to two different neutrons scattering technique, during three days devoted to experiments and data analysis. One of the distinguishing features of our school is that the students often come with their own samples, which are tested during the training together with our demonstration samples. This ensures a good and efficient participation of the students. The course lasts for 3.5 days.

Structural Biology on the Move

With the 61st Benzon Symposium: `Structural Biology on the Move' we wish to highlight a collection of the most intriguing analytical challenges in the light of selected splendid achievements within structural biology. Notably, we will cover magnitudes of length-scales, from high-resolution analysis to whole-cell imaging, promoting current important development within hybrid structural analysis, where methods across boundaries between established and emerging disciplines are applied. With the 61st Benzon Symposium, we aim to envision the grand opportunities that are to come in structural biology.
The Symposium is a full four day scientific meeting. The format will be a combination of state-of-the-art lectures by invited speakers, by selected oral-poster presentations, and poster presentations.

Effect of Disorder and Disordered Materials
This new Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Neutron Scattering, to be held in Hong Kong in 2015, will feature world-leading neutron scattering scientists who will share and discuss their latest discoveries in the GRC (interactive) style. As it is impossible to capture all new activities over a very diverse field of neutron scattering studies, the conference will instead focus on selected topics that have seen rapid developments over the last few years. Innovative instrumentation is the backbone of scientific discoveries, and thus one of the nine sessions will be devoted to discussions of the performance of innovative instruments. A diverse and vibrant user community is vital for the success of the neutron scattering facilities. We thus particularly encourage the participation of young scientists, to learn and profit from interactions with leading scientists in neutron scattering in the casual environment provided by the conference.

The conference will be open to the `Grand Public' with the aim to show the great impact crystallography has on many aspects of our lives nowadays:

- molecular engineering and crystallography
- crystals in bio-engineering
- defects in crystals and structure materials
- aperiodic crystals.
To this end, few among the best European experts have confirmed their contribution: C. Lecomte, P. Cordier, A. Schuhl, D. Lupinsky, C. Sanchez, D. Moras, Y. Brechet and T. Janssen will give and overview of their respective fields that will be understandable to the layman with a minimum scientific background.
The conference is organized by Académie Lorraine des Sciences (www.als.uhp-nancy.fr) and will take place on Nov 15, 2014 in the magnificent City Hall of Nancy, France from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
