The First Latin American Crystallography Meeting is being organized as a joint event with the IXth Annual Meeting of the Argentinean Crystallographic Association in Córdoba, Argentina. It will be hosted by the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba - www.unc.edu.ar , coinciding with the celebration of the 400th anniversary of its foundation in 1613. UNC is the oldest university in Argentina and number 4 among the oldest in Latin America. Its original pavilions and buildings have been declared by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The scientific program will include plenary lectures, oral presentations and poster sessions. Full details and information can be found at the homepage of the event: www.cristalografia2013.com.ar. Satellite meetings include a "Workshop on neutron techniques for the characterization of materials" and a "School on crystal structure analysis and microcrystalline characterization using powder diffraction data".

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES

Faculty of Sciences, University Mohammed I Oujda-er and the Moroccan Association of Crystallography (AMC) organized the 5th Moroccan School of Crystallography from 23 to 27 October 2013.
CMA organizes every two years a school on topics related to crystallography. The 1st school was held at the Faculty of Sciences of Marrakech in 2002, 2nd Faculty of Sciences El Jadida 2004, the 3rd Faculty of Sciences in Agadir 2006, the 4th at the Faculty of Sciences of Rabat in 2008 and the 24th European Meeting of crystallography ECM24 in Marrakech 2007.
This scientific event is part of the preparations for the International Year of Crystallography 2014.
The objective of this scientific event is to bring together potential users of crystallography, academics and industry to review the latest developments in this field. In addition to the fundamental aspect of crystallography, multiple applications extend the mining industry to the pharmaceutical industry through metallurgy and nuclear. This course is intended for researchers, PhD students, teachers and researchers and engineers. It will be moderated by scientists internationally renowned personalities in the form of conferences, courses and practical work. Part will be dedicated to the demonstration of new hardware and software to the latest crystallography.

School of Advanced Studies in Crystallization and Crystallography for Latin America

Welcome

The School of Advanced Studies in Crystallization and Crystallography for Latin America (ECRISLA) sponsored by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) and promoted by the International Organization of Crystal Growth (IOCG) is addressed to graduate students from Brazil and Latin America. These areas of knowledge, crystallization and crystallography are complementary, the event is an important opportunity to deepen their knowledge in an integrated manner. ECRISLA want to create a space for study, discussion and confraternization among teachers, internationally recognized experts, and students. To this end, national and international speakers will address various topics of theoretical and practical methods of crystallization and crystallography studies applied to structure determination of organic compounds and bioinorganic, the crystallization of drugs, materials science and nanotechnology. ECRISLA is structured in two distinct modules: Module 1: Crystallization and Module2: Crystallography. The number of entries for the event will be limited, and partial scholarship can be given to a limited number of students. ECRISLA School will be held in Florianopolis (SantaCatarina, Brazil) 13 - 18 November (Module 1) and 21 - 25 November (Module 2) at the campus of Universidade Federal de SantaCatarina (UFSC) and at the Hotel Maria Mar.

A Joint Meeting of the Asian Crystallographic Association (AsCA),Â
Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand (SCANZ) and the BRAGG Symposium

November 2012 marks the centenary of the founding of X-ray crystallography by Lawrence Bragg, a field in which he and his father, William, made pre-eminent contributions that were recognised by the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915. William was the Elder Professor of Physics at the University of Adelaide from 1886 to 1909 and Lawrence was born and educated in Adelaide.Â

To celebrate this important anniversary, the legacy of the Braggs' discoveries in X-ray crystallography and the insights that they have provided into the structure of matter, a combined scientific meeting of the Asian Crystallography Association and the Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand is to be held in Adelaide from the 2nd to 5th of December 2012. The Conference will be followed by the Bragg Symposium at the University of Adelaide on the 6th of December 2012 that will explore some of the historical context and personal links to the Braggs' work as well as present some of the broader scientific and social impacts of the Braggs' work. The Conference and Symposium will have a strong line-up of national and international speakers.

Three years after their second successful Meeting (MISCA 2010, Oviedo, Spain), and six years after they organized their first joint Conference in Italy (MISCA 2007, Copannello di Stalettì, Italy), the Italian and Spanish Crystallography Associations deemed it necessary to renew this traditional event.
Stimulated also by the interest shown by the Swiss Crystallography Society, the three National Associations have merged their efforts to organize, in the beautiful surroundings of Villa Olmo, on the shore of the Lake of Como, the first Meeting of the Italian, Spanish and Swiss Crystallography Associations - MISSCA 2013.
In our intentions, the Conference will contribute to broaden the scientific contacts among the Members of the three communities. Â Moreover, thanks to the choice of an easily accessible location near Central Europe, it may attract scientists from neighboring Countries and fields.
Nearly one century has passed since Nobel Prizes were awarded for the discovery of diffraction by crystals and for closely related scientific activities. Later on, in 1927, Villa Olmo hosted the first Volta Conference, in which the uncertainty principle by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg was originally disclosed. It is therefore a pleasure for us to invite you to attend the MISSCA 2013 Conference, timely juxtaposing a historical location with a memory of  significant change of paradigms in Science. 28th European Crystallography Meeting

The main conference drew to a close following an inspiring lecture by Nobel Prize winner Dan Shechtman “Quasi-Periodic Materials â€" Crystals Redefined”.

Conference organisers Sandy Blake and Elspeth Garman thanked the many people involved in planning and running the meeting; the meeting has been an outstanding success thanks to a lot of hard work behind the scenes. A special thanks to Mike Glazer, Pam Thomas and their team for the wonderful ‘Two Braggs Exhibition’ which has run throughout the meeting and brought together a fascinating and inspiring collection of artefacts, art and correspondence never before seen in one exhibition.
During the closing ceremony many poster prizes were awarded. Congratulations to all of the well-deserving winners. Details will appear in the meeting reports, which will be linked from here, in due course.

Meeting Round-up

The 2012 Annual Meeting was held in Boston, Mass., July 28 through August 1. (785) participants presented 258 posters and 294 lectures at the beautiful Westin Waterfront Hotel. Thirty-nine exhibitors participated in the Exhibit Show, beginning with the Opening Reception on Saturday and running through Tuesday evening. Â Attendees traveled from 30 different counties with 23% of the total participants coming from outside the USA. Young scientists (students and post-docs) represented 32% of the total meeting attendance. Â Eleven posters were selected for poster prizes, sponsored by the ACA and seven other groups. Nine students were selected to receive the Margaret C. Etter Student Lecturer Award. Each was invited to give a lecture and was presented with a certificate and monetary award. Â The meeting was financially supported by 33 organizations (scroll down for complete list) whose contributions were used to support young scientists, speakers and social events. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our meeting sponsors whose support sustains the high caliber of our meetings that our attendees have come to expect. Â Marius Krawiec (Vertec Pharmaceuticals) won free membership for 2013 by attending the Business Meeting. Â Winners of the free hotel room raffle were: Â Ming Dong (U. of Delaware), Gary Angles (New Mexico Highlands U.), Annet Bodenheimer (North Carolina State U.), Miguel Garcia-Garibay (U. of California, L.A.), and Bobby Barnett (U. of Cincinnati). Scope of the School

Crystallography is a mature scientific discipline, which has contributed, in the recent past, to the development of drugs, to the understanding of the biological activity of proteins and nucleic acids, to the comprehension of the unique properties of crystals at the nanometer scale for diagnosis and drug-delivery and to shedding light on complex hierarchical organic-inorganic composites such as bone and enamel.
The purpose of the 2012 International Insubria Summer School is to explore the multiple aspects of crystallography: the world of crystallization, the more traditional and advanced experimental andcomputational techniques and other complementary methods, which will be specifically focussed to the applications on health- and bio-sciences.
A full intensive week will be organized under the guide of internationally recognized experts in the field.

The department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences and Techniques, University Cheikh Anta Diop, in collaboration with the University of Trento, Italy, following the success of the second African School and Workshop on X-rays in Materials, held in Dakar, in January 2009, organizes the third edition of such school-workshop.

The Latin American Seminar of Analysis by X-ray techniques (SARX) is a meeting that takes place in the countries of Latin America, bringing together the best researchers in the world to promote the exchange of experiences in the development of science and technology, using X-ray techniques. Since 1997, SARX has taken place in many countries throughout Latin America, with researchers from around the world. The seminar is held every two years and the next will be in 2010, in Mexico. This year SARX 2010 will be organized by the Autonomous University of Puebla. The seminar will be held at the University Cultural Complex of the UAP in the city of Puebla, Pue., Mexico. Meeting Round-up

Thirty-five exhibitors participated in the Exhibit Show, beginning with the Opening Reception on Saturday and running through Tuesday evening. Â Attendees traveled from 27 different counties with 20% of the total participants coming from outside the USA. Young scientists (students and post-docs) represented 32% of the total meeting attendance. Â Twelve posters were selected for poster prizes, sponsored by the ACA and seven other groups. Eight students were selected to receive the Margaret C. Etter Student Lecturer Award. Each was invited to give a lecture and was presented with a certificate and monetary award. Â The meeting was financially sponsored by 22 organizations whose contributions were used to support young scientists, speakers and social events. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our meeting sponsors whose support sustains the high caliber of our meetings that our attendees have come to expect. Â The ACA Council proudly announced the inaugural class of ACA Fellows at the Awards Banquet.

The 2009 Joint Conference of the Asian Crystallographic Association (AsCA'09) and Chinese Crystallography Society

The Joint Conference of the Asian Crystallographic Association and the Chinese Crystallographic Society, 2009 (AsCA'09) was organized under the auspices of the Asian Crystallographic Association (AsCA), the Biophysical Society of China (BSC), the Chinese Crystallographic Society (CCS), the Institute of Biophysics CAS (IBP), Nankai University, Tsinghua University and Peking University. This conference was held in Beijing from October 22-25, 2009. Zihe Rao, president of BCS and Jianhua Lin, president of CCS jointly chaired the meeting.
AsCA is a large academic meeting of the Asian Crystallographic Society which is held every 3 years and is very popular within the international crystallographic community. This year, 518 delegates attended AsCA'09, of whom 310 were from the United States, England, Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, India and Bangladesh, and from Hong-Kong and Taiwan regions. Up to 299 conference papers were submitted to the organizing committee. Seven outstanding crystallographers, including Ted Baker, Hongkun Park, Joel Sussman, Matthew Rosseinsky, David Owen, Thomas Mak and Yoshinori Fujiyoshi, were invited as speakers. There were 84 oral presentations given and 208 academic posters presented at the conference. In addition, four training courses were arranged before the meeting, which provided opportunities for graduates and postdoctoral fellows to study the latest techniques, present their research and benefit from academic interaction. A new feature of this AsCA meeting was a Plenary Symposium Session for young scientists, called "AsCA Rising Stars". Six speakers were selected to participate in this symposium based on submitted abstracts. This session received the approval of the AsCA organizing committee and will be repeated in AsCA conferences in the future.
The opening ceremony started at 6:00pm on October 22 at the Beijing Jingyi Hotel and was presided over by the Executive chairman Zhijie Liu. Academician Dongcai Liang, a member of the AsCA Advisory Committee, and Prof. Peter Colman, Chairman of the AsCA Program, gave Welcome speeches. Prof. Ted Baker then gave the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) lecture.
The meeting focused on Crystallography and related research fields, covering Structural Biology, Chemical Crystallography - Structure and Properties, and Specialized Techniques in three sessions. The Structural Biology session covered hot spot topics such as Membrane proteins, Protein-nucleic acid complexes, Structural genomics, and Structural biology in disease/structure-based drug design. Five topics were covered in the Chemical Crystallography - Structure and Properties session: Inorganic and nano-materials, Charge density studies, Organic crystal engineering and structure, Metal-organic crystal engineering, and Superconductivity and crystal properties. Topics such as Neutron and synchrotron sources and applications, advanced imaging techniques, small-angle scattering and soft materials crystallography, powder diffraction, and electron microscopy and diffraction were highlighted in the specialized techniques session. The academic schedule of the meeting was packed and presenters did an excellent job at bringing delegates up-to-date with new areas of progress and trends in the field of Crystallography. Participants were actively involved in academic interaction and discussion. Most participants gave very positive feedback on the high standard of the presentations.
This meeting was successfully accomplished thanks to the hard work and efficient organization of BSC and IBP, with significant help from other organizations including the Bureau of International cooperation at CAS, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
