CCP-EM Icknield Workshop on Model Building and Refinement for High Resolution EM Maps

In Harwell
This course is aimed at structural biologists with high resolution EM maps
ready for / in the process of modelling building and refinement. This
three day course will host some of the leading software developers and
provide ample contact time to allow delegates to discuss their data in
detail alongside traditional lectures and tutorials.
The course will be held at the RAL / Diamond campus, Harwell, UK.
Registration is free and we will provide food and two nights accommodation
at the Bear Hotel in nearby Wantage (2nd & 3rd March). Delegates are asked
to meet their own travel costs.
The course is limited to 20 delegates which will be selected from all
applicants. A maximum of 50 applicants can register interest.
Applications will close on Tuesday 2nd February and the 20 successful
applicants will be notified the following day.

Integrating X-ray crystallography and scattering with electron microscopy

The course covers a multidisciplinary approach to study the structure of
challenging proteins, focusing on membrane proteins and large complexes.
The basic principles will be provided for each addressed technique
(Macromolecular Crystallography, Mass Spectrometry and Electron
Microscopy); their applications in biological systems, major benefits
and limitations will also be discussed.
The Workshop is organized with lectures in the mornings followed by
hands-on training. The course is aimed primarily at PhD students and
young Post-Doctoral researchers interested in Structural Biology.
Confirmed speakers are Jose Maria Carazo, Dmitri Svergun and Isabel de
Moraes.
 Participants will be limited to 20. Candidate selection will be based on
a short CV, a motivation letter from the applicant, and a recommendation
letter from the supervisor.

TAILOR2016. TAILored surfaces in Operando conditions: structure and Reactivity

This meeting will be devoted to recent advances in the operando investigation of reactivity at surfaces from both experimental and theoretical points of view.
The sessions of the workshop will cover various topics, mainly related to operando studies of the structure and the reactivity of a large range of catalytic tailored materials, including model surfaces, well-defined supported nanoparticles and electrochemical systems. The oral presentations and poster sessions will be open to a wide list of experimental techniques including spectroscopy, microscopy, X-ray scattering and scanning probes, new developments of instrumentation, and also to recent advances in the field of theoretical approaches and models of surface science and heterogeneous catalysis.

Bioimaging is a term that covers the complex chain of acquiring, processing and visualizing structural or functional images of living objects or systems, including extraction and processing of image-related information. Examples of image modalities used in bioimaging are many, including: X-ray, CT, MRI and fMRI, PET and HRRT PET, SPECT, MEG and so on. Medical imaging and microscope/fluorescence image processing are important parts of bioimaging referring to the techniques and processes used to create images of the human body, anatomical areas, tissues, and so on, down to the molecular level, for clinical purposes, seeking to reveal, diagnose, or examine diseases, or medical science, including the study of normal anatomy and physiology. Image processing methods, such as denoising, segmentation, deconvolution and registration methods, feature recognition and classification represent an indispensable part of bioimaging, as well as related data analysis and statistical tools.

The 2016 Symposium builds on our very successful previous meeting on the same theme in 2014.
The goal of the Symposium is to discuss state of the art image analysis approaches to tackle challenging biological problems and to identify current limitations and remaining problems in the field as currently practiced. The goal will be for developers in this area, both established as well as students/postdocs to discuss the detailed algorithms and methodologies in this field in greater technical detail than is possible at more general meetings like the GRC. The central premise is that gaining a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of highly sophisticated machines, complexes, and organelles of the cell requires the active, timely and coordinated development of complementary image analysis and data mining algorithm and approaches. We have recruited an outstanding panel of speakers (current agenda provided in the web site).

HERCULES 2016 - European School. 26 Years of Neutron & Synchrotron Radiation Science

HERCULES is a European course for PhD students and young researchers using Neutrons and Synchrotron Radiation for applications in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Hard & Soft Condensed Matter.
   The 1-month school includes lectures (60%), hands-on practicals and tutorials at partner institutes (DESY and European XFEL in Hamburg, Ellettra and FERMI in Trieste, ESRF, ILL in Grenoble, Soleil and LLB near Paris, SLS in Switzerland) and Grenoble Laboratories (CEA, CNRS, EMBL, IBS).
   The school includes a common part and two parallel sessions:

2016 MicroED workshop

In Ashburn, VA
MicroED is a technique that uses electron diffraction to facilitate structure determination from sub-micron sized crystals, eliminating the need to grow large crystals. MicroED uses equipment and procedures that are standard on many cryo-TEM:s, and because of this the technique can be easily adopted in labs and facilities around the world. To encourage the widespread use of MicroED we are offering this workshop to teach microscopists how to perform the technique and adopt it at their own institutions.
There is no registration fee for participation, and Janelia will provide on-site housing and meals. Attendees are expected to cover their own travel expenses and must be able to stay for the duration.
