SCOPE
Synchrotron and neutron sources offer recent and additional insight into the records of our cultural past. Over the last years, there has been an increasing demand for access to SR- and neutron-based techniques, and their applications in the fields of archaeological science and cultural heritage. The purpose of this Hercules Specialized Course is to give the participants an introduction to the basic principles of SR and neutron techniques (imaging, microscopy, diffraction, absorption and fluorescence, IR spectroscopy). The school will also provide cross-disciplinary examples illustrating the abilities of these techniques in a representative range of scientific cases in relation with the European cultural heritage. The lectures will cover both theoretical and experimental aspects to the attention of a non-expert audience. They will be complemented by tutorials (diffraction and XAS data processing), and practicals on a selection of artefacts taking place at several ESRF and ILL beamlines. Young scientists and newcomers at the interfaces of the disciplines of archaeology, archaeological science, art conservation and materials science are welcome.ORGANISERS

Introductory lectures:Â
Over the first 2 days, the HSC includes introductory talks on core SR and neutron methods (diffraction, XAS) and will also cover recent and dedicated developments in IR spectroscopy, full-field 2/3D imaging, micro-beams and microscopy, together with related tutorials.Complementarity lecturesÂ
The last day covers a variety of archaeological and cultural heritage issues, e.g. studies of pigments, metal ware, manuscripts and parchments, tissues, ceramics and glasses.PracticalsÂ
2 days of beamtime are planned for training and practising at the ESRF and ILL. The participants are encouraged to discuss with us the possibility to bring over their own samples as test cases and for preliminary measurements.

9th International Biology and Synchrotron Radiation Conference

We are pleased to announce that 9th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation will be held in the UK in August 2007. The main event (13th to 16th August, inclusive) will take place at the Manchester International Congress Centre. This will be followed for those with special interests by a visit to DIAMOND Light Source (on 17th August) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. The sessions at Diamond will be primarily oriented towards the instrumentation and technology.It is an exciting time for Biological sciences and synchrotron radiation. Several new synchrotron sources would be coming on line including SOLEIL in France and DIAMOND in the UK. In the UK, in 2007, the Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS Daresbury) should still be producing important biological results, DIAMOND will be commissioned in January 2007 and the prototype of the new venture of the VUV Free-electron-laser based proto-type facility of 4GLS should be completed Daresbury. The world's first X-ray coherent source, LCLS is scheduled to produce first beam in 2008 offering new challenges to the biophysics and biological communities.

Taiwan National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center Annual Users' Meeting and 20th Anniversary of Operation

The meeting will begin on September 4 with sessions covering the current status reports and future plans regarding NSRRC’s light source & beamlines. After that, several notable users from different fields will present their cutting-edge research. In the afternoon, seven interest groups and the Users’ Town Meeting, hosted by the User Executive Committee (UEC), will take place sequentially. During the Users’ Town Meeting, users can communicate and discuss issues related to the experiments, user service and future development at NSRRC with Director Chang. In addition, this year is the 20th anniversary of operation. All the attendees are invited to join the celebration for the anniversary with us.Â
On September 5, two workshops will be held simultaneously. Oral presentations for the poster contest will be held and classified into different groups according to their research fields. Each Poster Contest group will have a first prize winner and he/she will be presented with the “Glory of Taiwan†award in the subsequent dinner banquet and the awards ceremony.Â
Workshop I: Unconventional Photoelectron Spectroscopy: NAP-XPS and HAXPESÂ
The aim of the workshop is to bring experts to discuss the recent development of unconventional x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS) either operated with sample kept at near ambient pressure (NAP) or performed with hard x-ray (HAX) photons. These two powerful variants of XPS make possible the investigation of in-situ catalysis phenomenon and interfacial electronic structure of semiconductor heterojunction, respectively. The construction of these two facilities has been incorporated into TPS phase II project.ÂWorkshop II: Applications of Synchrotron Radiation to Structural Biology.Â
The aim of this workshop is to provide great opportunities and new applications for the studies of structural biology by utilizing and integrating the current NSRRC facilities toward future development. During the workshop, distinguished scientists and scholars will present their recent research and development using protein crystallography (PX), X-ray small angle scattering (XSAS), circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) Microscopy.Â

Exploring time, energy and length scales in condensed matter
Institut Montana, Zug, Switzerland  The PSI summer school 2014 is dedicated to the topic: Exploring time, energy and length scales in condensed matter. International experts and PSI staff members will introduce and deepen your knowledge of these scientific topics. Additionally, you will learn about the experimental methods applied at the large-scale facilities of PSI in order to understand the phenomena, presently at the forefront of modern solid state physics and chemistry.Synchrotron radiation, neutron, and muon sources are used to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Using these facilities, the focus of the school is the study of dynamic processes in nature and technology, over the full range of time and length scales at which they actually occur. The principles of the underlying experimental methods will be explained. Evening lectures will address the importance of time, energy and length scales in other scientific fields.  Following the school a practical training at PSI is offered to a limited number of participants. The training allows a hands-on experience at the beamlines of the facilities.

12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science
ISSRNS is a series of meetings, organised every two years, devoted to recent advances and new techniques employing synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine.
The 12th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science (ISSRNS 2014) will be organized by Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society (PTPS) in cooperation with two Polish institutions, the Institute of Physics, of the Polish Academy of Sciences, (Warsaw) and National Centre for Nuclear Physics, (Otwock/Świerk) from 15th to  20th of June 2014 in Warsaw (Poland).  ISSRNS is a traditional forum for discussing fundamental issues of application of the synchrotron radiation and related methods in natural sciences. The aim of this interdisciplinary meeting is to bring together scientists working with synchrotron radiation. The Symposium will focus on novel applications of synchrotron radiation in physics, chemistry, material science, biology and medicine.THE TOPICS OF ISSRNS 2014 INCLUDE:

Synchrotron radiation has become an indispensable tool for many macromolecular crystallography groups. Some synchrotron-specific skills are difficult to learn without ones having an intensive hands-on training program. But not all research groups have the luxury of providing long training sessions for students and postdocs. To provide such an educational experience, we have designed a course in Rapid Data Collection and Structure Solving.

This school provides training for students, postdoctoral and senior scientists from European and non-European universities and laboratories, in the field of Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for condensed matter studies (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Geosciences, Industrial applications).It includes lectures, practicals, tutorials, and visits of Large Facilities.
The ~4-week school is a yearly event, established in 1991.
20 YEARS OF HERCULES
Since its first session, in 1991, HERCULES has displayed a number of features that differentiate these courses from the rest: i.e. simultaneous training in neutron and synchrotron radiation science for about 75 participants over several weeks, multidisciplinarity, lectures and tutorials given by highly qualified international specialists, and a substantial fraction of the programme devoted to practical sessions carried out on cutting edge instruments, at European Large Facilities partner institutes.Â
