2014 BCA-BSG Biological Structures Group Winter Meeting

*The 2014 BCA-BSG Winter Meeting will take place on the European Photon and Neutron (EPN) Campus (hosting the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Institute Laue Langevin), Grenoble, France on 15-17 December 2014. The meeting will be themed around opportunities for Structural Biology at large-scale research infrastructure and will include sessions addressing the combination of structural information from X-rays & neutrons in Structural Biology, Structural Biology on the EPN Campus, and Emerging Techniques in Structural Biology.

The deadline for registration is the 8 December.
The programme includes a poster session. Contributions from younger and more senior scientists on any aspect of Structural Biology are actively encouraged.
 In order to help reduce the costs of attending the meeting, the registration fee (32EUR for students; 64EUR for regular participants) will include the cost of all meals during the meeting, including the meeting dinner on 16 December and as many participants as possible will be housed - at participants' own cost - in the cost effective ESRF/ILL Guesthouse. The registration fee also includes membership of the BCA for the year 2015.

ESLS XXII. European Synchrotron Light Source Workshop

The XXII European Synchrotron Light Source workshop will be hosted by the ESRF on 25th and 26th November in Grenoble, France. The workshop programme will cover all relevant aspects of the design, construction, operation and improvement of synchrotron light sources. It will focus on storage ring based sources and will be divided into four parts:
- Status and projects of each facility, - Engineering frontiers for new projects (magnets, girders and mechanical engineering) proposed as a topical subject, - Short talks highlighting recent developments, - Two overview talks to be chosen within low emittance projects, user requirements and points of views, reliability etc.Participation in the workshop is free of charge. As is the custom, the ESRF will cover two nights' accommodation for up to two participants from each institute.

Scope of the Workshop
The aim of the workshop is to discuss the scientific opportunities and technical challenges opened by the recent improvements in the study of dynamically compressed matter using X-rays. For example, the feasibility of synchrotron radiation single shot X-Ray Diffraction, X-ray Absorption and X-Ray Imaging experiments has been recently assessed and opens many new and exciting opportunities to extend these experiments to a wider user community.

The European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS), in collaboration with La Casemate Grenoble, invites European secondary school science teachers to apply for the ELLS LearningLAB “Structural biology â€" shining light onto the fabric of life†at EMBL Grenoble (France).
The course will provide an interactive introduction to the field of structural biology. The professional training course for secondary school science teachers will consist of a mix of seminars by EMBL scientists, hands-on activities and visits to world-class research facilities on the European Photon & Neutron Science Campus. The programme will cover a wide range of topics and highlight the use of high-energy X-ray sources and protein crystallography to study virus structures on the atomic scale.
During the 2-day course, a combination of seminars, discussions and hands-on activities will:
- Introduce you to X-ray crystallography and its great potential to gain insights into the structure and function of viral proteins and antiviral drug design;
- Update your knowledge on current biological research and get you in touch with research scientists;
- Illustrate a range of classroom activities and experiments and equip you to use the presented resources to support your teaching of biology;
- Include visits to world-class research facilities at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory Grenoble and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF);
- Give you the opportunity to develop your own scientific quiz and make it available to your students using the EMBL LearnApp;

MX BAG Users training days at Diamond Light Source

The aim is to provide MX users with sufficient training to be able to operate any of the Diamond MX beamlines efficiently and to get the most benefit from their beamtime. The training will involve hands-on sessions on the suite of five operational MX beamlines (http://www.diamond.ac.uk/mx-home/) as well as offline software sessions.
Sessions include:
4th December, day session on MX beamlines:
 *  MX software: automation in data analysis
 *  Mini-Kappa goniometry / Anomalous data collection
 *  Sample humidity control (HC1)
 *  I24 new end station
 *  In-situ diffraction
 *  Experiment database: new ISPyB
5th December, morning session: Hands on software in
three tutorial sessions:
 *  CCP4: MR and experimental phasing (CCP4 team)
 *  Manual processing iMosflm (Harry Powell)
 *  Multi crystal analysis / BLEND (James Foadi)
Registration is free-of-charge with lunch provided on the 4th and 5th December, and accommodation and dinner for the nights of the 3rd and 4th December. Travelling expenses within the UK will also be provided. The training is targeted at all users, and is not limited to students and post docs. It is essential that each BAG sends at least one representative per calendar year.

Physical and Chemical Characterization of Surfaces at Different Scales: From Theory to Applications. International School.

School aims and scope
The international school aims at providing a thorough background in physical and chemical surface characterization, based on methods and instruments, to interested PhD students, post-docs and scientists working at European and non-European universities and laboratories. The school will cover the different aspects of surface analysis and appropriate analytical techniques in detail, from the most conventional (Raman spectroscopy, AFM/STM, IBA) to the most innovative requiring Synchrotron X-ray (X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray microscopy, X-ray diffraction/scattering). The complementarity between laboratory and X-ray based techniques will be presented.
Plenary lectures and tutorials are given by specialists of materials science, solid state-physics, physico-chemical interface from CEA, Synchrotron SOLEIL and Paris Sud University. A substantial part of the programme is devoted to practical sessions carried out on cutting edge instruments, at the facilities of partner institutes and laboratories. In addition, a practical exercise on how to prepare a successful beam time proposal is given, as well as a poster session and a tour of SOLEIL. Examples presented during the lectures cover the variety of existing applications to physics and chemistry of condensed matter.
The attendees will be able to discuss their own projects with the speakers and other participants.

BESSY II - From PICO to FEMTO. Workshop on time-resolved studies at BESSY II

Synchrotron-based, time-resolved techniques provide unprecedented insights into various areas of applied and fundamental science, this being largely due to their unique capabilities of allowing for a direct view onto the constituent building blocks of matter (electrons, spins, atoms, and molecules) on their characteristic length- and time-scales.
Prominent examples are the detection of non-equilibrium phases of matter, the characterization of transient and metastable magnetic and chemical states and the real-time observation of light-harvesting materials and biological systems, just to name a few.
As such, there is an increased demand ofthe user community for high brilliance X-ray light sources with flexible time structures that could accommodate such time-resolved techniques covering the full spectral range from far-IR to hard X-rays.
In a series of foresight work-shops, HZB wishes to establish a discussion platform for future projects and research activities in concert with current and future users from universities, research institutes and industry. The aim of the dialogue is to reveal future scientific fields as well as expectations, needs and requirements for cutting edge science with synchrotron radiation.
HZB kindly invites you to join our workshop on ultrafast X-ray science in order to start or intensify a dialogue with us about future science and your requirements for successful experiments at our synchrotron.

This school provides training for students, postdoctoral and senior scientists from European and non-European universities and laboratories, in the field of Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for condensed matter studies (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Geosciences, Industrial applications).
The 1-month school includes lectures (60%), hands-on practicals and tutorials at partner institutes (ESRF, ILL in Grenoble, Soleil and LLB near Paris, SLS in Switzerland) and Grenoble Laboratories (CEA, CNRS, EMBL, IBS).
