The Low Temperature Physics Conference is an international event held every three years, under the auspices of the IUPAP through its Commission C5 on Low Temperature Physics. These conferences aim at the exchange of information and views among the members of the international scientific community in the general field of Low Temperature Physics, promoting the excellence of invited and contributed presentations. It is a tradition that LT offers updates on the various topics, provided by the highest representatives of the field, as well as oral and poster contributions in the different areas.

The conference is a satellite meeting previous to "27^th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics" (LT-27). AToMS will have two main goals. The first one is to promote the exchange of new ideas on recent topics of Magnetism and Superconductivity between internationally distinguished scientists as well as local researchers in the field. The second one is to dedicate part of the meeting to celebrate the academic and scientific career of Julián Sereni, Professor at Instituto Balseiro, and one international distinghished scientist in the study of Cerium-based strongly correlated electronic systems.

The 9th Liquid Matter Conference will take place at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, 21-25 July 2014. Previous conferences in this series were held in Lyon (1990), Firenze (1993), Norwich (1996), Granada (1999), Konstanz (2002), Utrecht (2005), Lund (2008), and Vienna (2011). The conference is organized jointly by the Liquids Section of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society, the University of Lisbon, and the School of Engineering of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute (ISEL).

The conference will start on the morning of Monday 21 July 2014, and finish around lunchtime on Friday, 25 July 2014. The purpose of this conference is to bring together scientists working on the liquid state of matter and closely related topics, such as soft matter and biophysics. The rapidly growing field covered by this conference series therefore includes the physics, chemistry, biology, and chemical engineering of liquid matter as well as several areas of applied research.

The conference will consist of plenary lectures, topical symposia with keynote lectures and contributed oral presentations, as well as poster sessions. The highlights of the conference will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter.

The Rhine-Knee Regional Meeting on Biocrystallography (Regiomeeting) has become an institution for biocrystallographic laboratories from the French, German and Swiss area. It aims at facilitating scientific exchange between senior, junior and starting biocrystallographers, and structural biologists in general, from the Rhine-Knee region.

The meeting will cover diverse aspects of crystallographic research ranging from life sciences, drug development, crystal engineering to theory, instrumentation, synchrotron and neutron studies.

The International Program Committee is working very hard to bring together a stimulating program that covers all aspects of crystallography with research talks on progress at the forefront of our subject. 2015 marks a very special anniversary in our discipline marking 100 years since the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Sir William Henry Bragg and his son William Lawrence Bragg.

Over 80% of all pharmaceutical products are in the solid dosage form. Particulate processes therefore abound in the pharmaceutical industry. These include crystallization; high-shear granulation; fluidized bed drying, granulation, and coating; tablet compaction; fine powder transport, mixing, and blending. These and other particulate processes are used for the large-scale manufacture of tablets and capsules for public consumption. As such, efficient handling and processing of particulates is critical to meeting the stringent guidelines set by the FDA and profitable manufacture of pharmaceutical products. Failed batches can mean the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue needed to payback the tremendous up-front investment that is inherent in drug development. A recent US-FDA report on the pharmaceutical industry estimated that worldwide cost savings from manufacturing improvements could be as high as US$ 90 billion per year.
Particulate-based manufacturing processes need to be better understood so that they can be properly controlled and scaled up. The last decade has seen a shift from empirical formulation efforts to an engineering approach based on a better understanding of particulate behaviours in the process, facilitated by technological advances in computer modelling, manufacture and measurement techniques.

ECCB'14 is the key European computational biology event in 2014 gathering scientists working at the intersection of a broad range of disciplines including computer science, mathematics, biology, and medicine. New challenges are emerging today in these fields with the recent advances in low-cost ultra-fast sequencing, bio-imaging and big-data approaches. Databases and software are evolving especially rapidly. Nonetheless, new algorithms are still required to improve computing with massive biological or biomedical data. Indeed, multi-scale integrative analyses are struggling to deal with the enormous complexity of biological systems modeling and the "data deluge" that results from next-generation sequencing technologies.

Participation at ECCB'14 will be the prime opportunity to keep pace with cutting-edge research in such exciting topics, and to network with other members of our community.Â

ECCB'14 is the 13th edition of the ECCB conference series, which in 2014 will take place in the historic city of Strasbourg in the north-east of France. ECCB'14 will incorporate JOBIM, the annual French bioinformatics conference. Advances in microscopy have seen the advent of super resolution imaging, mapping single molecules down to <8 nm resolution compared with conventional light microscopy that achieves only ~250 nm. Single molecules play an important role in biology, since most cells contain one or two copies of genomic DNA molecules, which eventually determine the fate and function of the organism. One DNA molecule provides a limited number of binding sites for a particular transcription factor. At the protein level it was recently found that half of all proteins in an E.coli cell are present in ten or less molecules per cell (Taniguchi et al., Science 2010, 329, 533-8). Furthermore, proteins can show heterogeneity at the level of post-translational modifications. Static or dynamic heterogeneity may be an underlying principle of various yet-to-be discovered mechanisms or provide an explanation of unexpected results found in ensemble-level experiments. An increasing number of researchers use lab-based experimental methods that have the ability to study the function of biomolecules in vitro or in vivo with single-molecule resolution, while in silico molecular simulation methods intrinsically directed at single molecules were often used to predict or explain ensemble-based properties. Lab-based experimental methods often encounter heterogeneity and molecular simulations offer a unique opportunity to gain molecular insights into this heterogeneity. The aim of this focused meeting is to bring together researchers from the area of molecular simulation with researchers using single-molecule experimental approaches in order to increase our understanding of biomolecules and their functioning mechanisms in vitro and in vivo.

The Murnau Conference on Structural Biology encompasses the current areas of experimental structural biology, in particular Electron Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and X-ray Crystallography. We focus on molecular questions, the properties of biological macromolecues and their interaction in the complex environment of a living organism. The bi-annual study group meeting in Murnau is set to provide a forum to discuss the latest advances in the field.

The 5th Murnau Conference will be dedicated to Signal Transduction as a focus topic, represented in three scientific sessions.

The Murnau Conference on Structural Biology is the biannual meeting of the study group Structural Biology of the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM).

Structural Biology has been chosen as the theme for the Latin American summit. Under the auspices of UNESCO and the IUCr, the summit meeting intends to provide a forum for stimulating the application of crystallography to complex biological phenomena. The meeting will consist of a series of scientific presentations by invited scientists from the region and will serve as a showcase for the progress which has been made in protein crystallography and related subjects over the course of the last 25 years. The relatively small number of participants (around 100) should guarantee a friendly environment conducive to discussing the scientific future of the region and specifically the contribution that crystallography can make to that future. It is hoped to have representatives from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela and Mexico amongst others. The importance of creating greater integration with the wider scientific community will be emphasized by the participation of world-class Latin American scientists who have had successful careers outside of the region as well as by the opening lecture to be given by Nobel Laureate Ada Yonath.

Scope and objectives

2014 has been designated the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr2014) under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Union of Crystallography. The major objectives of the IYCr2014 are:

• To increase public awareness of the science of crystallography and how it underpins most technological developments in our modern society;
• To inspire young people through public exhibitions, conferences and hands-on demonstrations in schools;
• To illustrate the universality of science;
• To intensify the programme Crystallography in Africa and create similar programmes in Asia and Latin America;
• To foster international collaboration between scientists worldwide, especially Northâ€"South cooperation;
• To promote education and research in crystallography and its links to other sciences;
• To involve the large synchrotron and neutron radiation facilities worldwide in the celebrations of IYCr2014, including the SESAME project set up under UNESCO auspices.

The 7th Vacuum and Surface Sciences Conference of Asia and Australia (VASSCAA-7) will be held from October 5th (Sunday) to 9th (Thursday), 2014 at National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.

The VASSCAA series is organized to create a new forum in Asia and Australia to discuss vacuum, surface and related sciences, techniques and applications. The conference is officially endorsed by the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA), and has subsequently been organized once every three years, and later every two years, starting from 1999, and has ever since expanded its activity to encompass numerous eminent speakers worldwide. More than 300 papers are expected to be presented in oral and poster sessions covering frontline research of Vacuum and Applied Surface Sciences. Collected papers through review presented in the conference will be published in the special issue of Applied Surface Science and VACUUM.
