Bunsentagung 2014. Annual Meeting of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry

The chemistry-based bottom-up nanoscience techniques evolved from colloid chemistry, a key topic in physical chemistry since the late 19th century. The major difference to classic colloid chemistry is the molecular control with which synthetic nanomaterials can be built up and investigated. This will be discussed in sessions dealing with the tailor-made synthesis of high quality nanostructured materials, the investigation of nucleation and the growth and assembly of nano-objects into complex hybride structures with advanced functionality. A strong boost in nanoscience came from the development of structural and chemical analysis techniques with atomic resolution and from the possibility to perform spectroscopic investigations and transport measurements on single nano-objects. Therefore, special sessions are devoted to topics such as the structural and electronic characterization, spectroscopy on the nanoscale, and the investigation of transport properties. Strongly correlated to these topics is the development of theoretical methods for the descriptions of such large systems with high accuracy. Furthermore, the application of nanoparticles in the life sciences, including the biological response to nanoparticles, the visualization of biological processes using specifically functionalized nanoparticles in combination with modern molecular imaging techniques will be part of the scientific program. Besides fascinating basic science, the conference will cover aspects of applications that arose in nanotechnology including high-tech materials with improved mechanical properties, novel materials for lightning, display technologies, catalysis, energy conversion and storage, as well as contrast agents and drug delivery systems for diagnosis and therapy.
Overall, nanoscience is a true transdiciplinary topic covering physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering. Since physical chemistry plays a central role in all these areas, the Bunsentagung 2014 will highlight these aspects as the main topic. Internationally outstanding scientists will give the opening and plenary lectures and progress reports on the various aspects of nanoscience and technology. Almost all of these topics will intentionally overlap with the more generic topical areas of the Bunsentagung 2014 to foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations on a leading edge level of expertise.

The scope of SXNS13 is to bring together scientists from different research areas that are using surface sensitive x-ray and neutron scattering and complementary techniques for the characterization of solid and liquid surfaces, interfaces and nanostructures in order to exchange new exciting scientific results and recent developments of the techniques. ESS Science Symposium: "Surface and Interface Reconstruction: A Challenge for Neutron Reflectometry"

Today, a large variety of complementary analytical techniques are routinely employed to determine and analyze surface structures and interfaces in situ. Electron microscopy, AFM/MFM, STM, LEED, photo electron spectroscopy, ellipsometry as well as classical x-ray and neutron diffraction/reflectometry and grazing incidence surface scattering give a wealth of information from the Ã...ngström to the micrometer length scale. However, classically, electron or ion based surface science techniques are limited to the vacuum environment. To determine structural or magnetic parameters of surfaces in ambient environmental conditions, like a surface submerged in a liquid, surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD) is used. Likewise, to access buried interfacial or magnetic properties within a heterostructure of layers, reflectometry with polarized neutrons has proven to be a very powerful tool, which allows a non-destructive depth profile vector magnetometry, to be carried out.
Structural in situ characterization of heteroepitaxial growth with x-rays can be used to track details and quantify parameters generally inaccessible to other non-destructive methods applied during growth. A variety of instrumental developments allow for optimum growth conditions during x-ray scattering experiments and for an in-depth analysis of the complete epitaxial process showing the different growth phases and a quantification of a variety of parameters involved in such processes. Coherent x-ray diffraction is capable to provide not only the structure but also dynamic information on atomic monolayer deposition on surfaces.
More recent developments allow the magnetic characterization during thin film growth to be carried out using magnetic x-ray scattering techniques. Further, currently the experimental capabilities for polarized neutron reflectometry during thin film growth are being developed to allow the understanding of the evolution of magnetic domains and the movement of domain walls in the nanometer regime.
In the past, neutrons have been applied to study surface and interface structures mainly using specular neutron reflectometry, which is an established method today and available at all major neutron sources world-wide. Within the last decade also off-specular neutron reflectometry and grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS), either monochromatic or using time-of-flight, have moved into the focus of interest with significant developments in measurement techniques and data analysis. These methods are hence very powerful for the determination of structured surfaces in the Ã...ngström to micrometer length scale (see the ESS Workshop on Off-Specular neutron Scattering, Brussels 2012).Â
Nevertheless, grazing incidence surface diffraction with neutrons is still often unknown to the potential user base, mainly due to the general understanding that due to the low available neutron flux and the large sample sizes required, these experiments would be rendered impossible. Some unique properties of neutron scattering like the isotopic conÂtrast variation to label specific molecular structures or atoms in e.g. soft matter systems are hence unexploited.
Undoubtedly, the current trend in research with neutrons is to decrease the sample sizes. Therefore, it is very important to adapt the experimental techniques to cope with small scattering cross sections and little sample material. Higher flux neutron instruments and focusing on small sample areas are, hence, the pre-requisite to enter this field of research. The option for more intense neutron beams at new spallation neutron sources (SNS, J-PARC, ESS) and the development of novel neutron optical concepts open completely new and challenging possiÂbiÂlities for the structural analysis of surfaces and interfaces with the vision to perform structural and magnetic surface reconstruction by neutron scattering.

Molecular Modelling 2014: From biomolecules to materials is the next conference of the Association of Molecular Modellers of Australasia (AMMA). The conference will be held in the Gold Coast hinterland in South-East Queensland in the lush rainforest of Lamington National Park, at the O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat.
The themes of the conference will include molecular dynamics and quantum chemistry simulations of materials, methodological developments in hierarchical modelling, computer-aided drug design and cheminformatics.
The meeting will organised similarly to a Gordon Conference with presentations in the morning, late afternoon and evening but time in the middle of the day to interact with other delegates and enjoy the unique location.
The main conference will be on 31 Julyâ€"2 August 2014. The conference will be preceded by a forum for PhD students and Early-Career Researchers (ECRs) on 30 July and 31 July 2014.

This meeting, which is to be one of the first official events of the International Year of Crystallography, 2014, as declared by UNESCO and the IUCr, provides a forum in which the greater Southern African scientific community can get exposure to recent developments in powder diffraction, as presented by internationally recognized leaders. And secondly, an opportunity for the African researchers, to present their own work in these areas to their national and international peers.
Powder diffraction along with its affiliated techniques; have evolved greatly in recent decades. Its domain is no longer primarily limited to qualitative and quantitative analysis of mineralogical and industrial samples, and advances in instrumentation and the development of new methodologies have seen it increasing being used in studies that address contemporary scientific and socially important challenges. Significant fields of activity now include the study of energy and other functional materials, polymorphism, various catalytic systems and mechanistic details of phase changes, gas solid reactions and interactions, using some powder diffraction related technique. The latter including; structure determination, Rietveld refinement, non-ambient studies, as well as total scattering based methods which have extended the reach of powder diffraction to include short range order phenomena, normally associated with amorphous or nano materials. Furthermore, reflectometry, small angle scattering, neutron based methods and electron crystallography, all important to materials science should all be well represented.

The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) Commission on High Pressure was establised in 1996 and a series of international workshops were held at the ESRF(97), APS(98), SPring-8(00), and in Orsay(01), Berkeley(03), Saskatoon(04), Dubna(06), Oxford(07), Harbin(09) and Gatlinburg(10). This year, to coincide with the opening of a high-pressure beamline at the spallation neutron source in J-PARC, the meeting will be held in Mito with a tour to J-PARC. It will be organized as a joint meeting of the Commission on High Pressure and the Quantum Beam Science Directorate, Japan Atomic Energy Agency.Scope
This conference will cover the whole range of activities of the IUCr Commission on High Pressure. Contributions in all areas within or closely related to the broad area of high-pressure crystallography will be welcome.

Sagamore will celebrate the centennial of Max von Laue's discovery of the X-ray diffraction by crystal, and W. H. and W. L. Bragg's demonstration of the crystal structure determination by X-ray in 1913 relating to a major theme of the conference. These groundbreaking experiments mark the birth of modern crystallography. The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) is marking the centennial of these events by declaring 2014 the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr2014). In addition, Sagamore XVII would also like to celebrate the birth of crystallography in Japan by Terada's demonstration of X-ray diffraction (X-Rays and Crystals, T. Terada, Nature, 91, 135-136 (10 April, 1913)) and Nishikawa's report on X-ray patterns of fibrous, lamellar and granular substances (S. Nishikawa and S. Ono, Proc. Tokyo Math-Phys. Soc., II-7, 131-138 (1913)).
Japan and Asia Oceania area has various light source and neutron facilities in addition to electron microscopy which are powerful tools for the charge, spin momentum density study. Therefore, the Role of the Advanced Probes for Next-generation Science on Charge, Spin and Momentum Density will be specially discussed in Sagamore XVII.
The location of Sagamore XVII allows visitors to experience lovely landscapes of Lake Toya, Mt. Ezo-Fuji, Volcanoes, etc. as well as various type of hot-springs. CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA 2nd - 7th September 2012We were delighted to have hosted the seventh International Conference on Aperiodic Crystals, Aperiodic 2012 in Cairns from September 2 to 7, 2012. We thank all the participants for their contributions and their support.
Aperiodic 2012 was the seventh International Conference on Aperiodic Crystals, organized under the auspices of the Commission on Aperiodic Crystals of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). It followed Aperiodic'94 (Les Diablerets), Aperiodic'97 (Alpe d'Huez), Aperiodic'2000 (Nijmegen), Aperiodic'03 (Belo Horizonte), Aperiodic'06 (Zao) and Aperiodic '09 (Liverpool). The next conference in this series will be held in Prague in 2015, organised by Lukas Palatinus and colleagues.
