Why a summer school named after Professor Ke Hsin Kuo?

Professor Ke Hsin Kuo (1923 - 2006) was a prominent electron microscopist and crystallographer. He attended Zhejiang University in the early 1940's. After studying and working in Sweden for ten years, he returned to China in 1956 and introduced electron microscopy to materials science research there. His discoveries of icosahedral, octagonal and decagonal quasicrystals in 1980’s and 1990’s placed him among the most influential electron microscopists and crystallographers in the world. Professor Kuo was also instrumental to the introduction of cryo electron microscopy to China. He served as President of the Asian Society of Electron Microscopy, President of the Chinese Society of Electron Microscopy, and Member of the Commission on Electron Diffraction of the Internal Union of Crystallography. Over the years, he trained more than 120 graduate students, most of them are currently active in scientific research. This school series is a tribute to Professor Kuo as a remarkable human being, a great scientist and a loving mentor.Â

The subject of the school series will alternate between biology and materials science.

Welcome to ECDM 6!

As a continuation of previous meetings held in Nancy (1996, France), Sitges (1999, Spain), Sandbjerg Estate (2003, Denmark), Brandenburg on the Havel (2006, Germany) and Gravedona (2008, Italy), we have the pleasure to announce the sixth conference of the European Charge Density Meeting series, ECDM-6.
Analogously to previous conferences we would like to present the latest results of electron structure studies. The ambition of organizers is to strengthen the collaboration between experimentalists and theorists. The construction of large facilities such as XFEL is a great challenge for all researchers in this field. Thanks to great improvements in experimental equipment as well as more powerful computers nowadays it is necessary to spread the results of charge density analysis in both the chemistry and the materials science communities in order to bring new practical applications.
We regard it as important to exploit the cross-fertilization of scientific ideas within the discussions of new research directions that should naturally result from the mixing of ideas of particular participants. This will also be the occasion to start thinking about specific programs in the charge density realm, how to exploit the funding by european science programs.
As a meeting venue we have chosen the city of Štrbské Pleso, a charming small village at the same glacial mountain lake in the High Tatras, a well known part of Slovakia. September has nice and stable weather, so we believe that we will have a nice time for relaxing. If you will come few days before or stay after the conference, this will largely increase your chance to enjoy nice sunny days on the lake and/or on the wonderful mountains surrounding the area.
Participants are expected to arrive to Štrbské Pleso in the afternoon of Saturday, September 15th for welcome reception. The meeting will run from Sunday, September 16th morning until Wednesday, September 19 evening. We will have the social excursion on Tuesday and later in the evening the ECDM-6 Social Dinner. ECDM-6 will then run over the next day and will be closed by a ceremony after the afternoon session on Wednesday, September 19th. Departure by conference buses is on Thursday, September 20th at 9 a.m.
We look forward bringing together an outstanding and diverse group of scientists at the forefront of charge density research and we promise to make attempts to include younger scientists and PhD and degree students as well.

Applications of Precession Electron Diffraction

Precession electron diffraction has become an important tool for electron crystallographers, with applications in conventional crystallography, texture mapping and both real and reciprocal space tomography. This satellite school to EMC 2012 will concentrate on all aspects of precession and its applications. Â

Through both lectures and practical classes this school intends to give delegates first-hand experience of using the technique.

Three years after their second successful Meeting (MISCA 2010, Oviedo, Spain), and six years after they organized their first joint Conference in Italy (MISCA 2007, Copannello di Stalettì, Italy), the Italian and Spanish Crystallography Associations deemed it necessary to renew this traditional event.
Stimulated also by the interest shown by the Swiss Crystallography Society, the three National Associations have merged their efforts to organize, in the beautiful surroundings of Villa Olmo, on the shore of the Lake of Como, the first Meeting of the Italian, Spanish and Swiss Crystallography Associations - MISSCA 2013.
In our intentions, the Conference will contribute to broaden the scientific contacts among the Members of the three communities. Â Moreover, thanks to the choice of an easily accessible location near Central Europe, it may attract scientists from neighboring Countries and fields.
Nearly one century has passed since Nobel Prizes were awarded for the discovery of diffraction by crystals and for closely related scientific activities. Later on, in 1927, Villa Olmo hosted the first Volta Conference, in which the uncertainty principle by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg was originally disclosed. It is therefore a pleasure for us to invite you to attend the MISSCA 2013 Conference, timely juxtaposing a historical location with a memory of  significant change of paradigms in Science. Dear Participants of BSR-2013,
we would like to thank you very much for your attendance and for the great atmosphere at the recent BSR-2013 conference in Hamburg. The conference was an important milestone in the developments of synchrotron radiation and free electron laser applications in biology.
We hope that all of you enjoyed the exciting program covering the most important present and further directions, and the scientific sessions containing excellent talks and lively discussions.
One of the highlights was a visit to the life science facilities at the DESY campus, and we received very positive comments about this visit and about the conference overall.
We have distributed a questionnaire about the conference which we encourage you to answer. Your answers will help us and future organisers of the BSR conferences to further improve and optimise the running of this conference series.
The conference had a great spirit due to the synergy between the speakers, chairs and participants, and also thanks to the excellent work of the local team from EMBL Hamburg and the Conference Office team from EMBL Heidelberg. Both teams were already sent our sincere thanks.
BSR-2013 was a great success and we look forward to the next conference in three years in Stanford.

The primary focus of the meeting will be recent scientific advances in powder and single crystal diffraction at static and dynamic high pressures. Presentations will cover a variety of subjects in and related to high-pressure crystallography, including crystal structures, phase transitions and their kinetics, new materials synthesis, Earth and planetary science, soft and biological matter, physical and chemical properties, theory and computation, as well as technique developments for high-pressure studies at synchrotron, neutron and laboratory-based facilities.  This workshop is a continuation of The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) Commission on High Pressure workshop series first established in 1996 followed by workshops at the ESRF (1997), APS (‘98), SPring-8 (‘00), in Orsay (‘01), Berkeley (‘03), Saskatoon (‘04), Dubna (‘06), Oxford (‘07), Harbin (‘09), Gatlinburg (‘10) and most recently in Mito (2012). This year the workshop will be held at DESY in Hamburg which looks back at a long history of high-pressure research at DORIS (shutdown in 2012) as part of HASYLAB.  In 2010, a new Extreme Conditions Beamline (ECB), optimized for high-pressure research in the Diamond Anvil Cell, opened at â€" PETRA III - the latest 3rd generation source with the currently smallest emittance in the world. In the future, DESY will extend its capabilities in the field of high-pressure research by adding a new Large Volume Press beamline at the extension of PETRA III and by contributing to the High Energy Density Instrument at the European XFEL which is being built in Hamburg. This year, the workshop will be organized jointly by the IUCr Commission on High Pressure and DESY.

The XXII Conference on Applied Crystallography

September 02-06, 2012, Targanice, Poland  The Conference will provide a platform for crystallographers, material scientists and solid state physicists to discuss methods and techniques used in crystallography studies, to present their recent achievements in solving different material problems, to promote new ideas in the field of material science. The conference programme will include oral and poster presentations covering both the fundamental and applied research.

Insights from Structure

The next Indaba, the seventh in a series of interdisciplinary workshops organized by the South African Crystallographic Society in conjunction with the Structural Chemistry Commission of the International Union of Crystallography, will be held over the period:

2 - 7 September 2012 at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park, South Africa

The theme of the workshop is Insights from Structure. The organisers will aim for a broad interpretation of this theme, to include various aspects of molecular structure: crystallography, spectroscopy, theory, etc. The workshop will be directed at all molecular scientists from chemistry, biology, physics, materials science and related fields. The scientific sessions will include invited keynote and contributed oral presentations as well as poster sessions.

The 12th International Conference on Quasicrystals (ICQ12)Â will be held on September 1 - 6, 2013, at the Faculty of Physics and Applied Computer Science, AGH University, Krakow, Poland.Â
ICQ12 provides an excellent opportunity to learn about new results in the field of quasicrystals and related topics. The ICQ12 follows the Nobel Prize given to Dan Shechtman in 2011 for the discovery of quasicrystals. Professor Shechtman will be an honourable guest of the Conference.Â
ICQ12 also offers an opportunity for researchers working on quasicrystals and related topics to exchange ideas and encourage collaborations with other research groups, hence promoting material science and engineering.Â

Scope

The objective of the school is to provide a comprehensive series of lectures on theoretical and experimental aspects of growth and characterization of semiconducting, oxide, metallic, organic, biological crystals and PV devices and equipment. A textbook containing slides selected form the lectures will be available at the School. The level of the school is intended for post-graduate and post-doctoral students as well as researchers from industry and academia who are interested in fundamental knowledge of crystal growth and epitaxy.

The new researcher in the field of crystal growth, as well as the advanced ones, are encouraged to attend.

Informal discussion of student research through posters is planned during the extended coffee breaks. In addition, several social activities will provide many opportunities for discussions.

28th European Crystallography Meeting

The main conference drew to a close following an inspiring lecture by Nobel Prize winner Dan Shechtman “Quasi-Periodic Materials â€" Crystals Redefined”.

Conference organisers Sandy Blake and Elspeth Garman thanked the many people involved in planning and running the meeting; the meeting has been an outstanding success thanks to a lot of hard work behind the scenes. A special thanks to Mike Glazer, Pam Thomas and their team for the wonderful ‘Two Braggs Exhibition’ which has run throughout the meeting and brought together a fascinating and inspiring collection of artefacts, art and correspondence never before seen in one exhibition.
During the closing ceremony many poster prizes were awarded. Congratulations to all of the well-deserving winners. Details will appear in the meeting reports, which will be linked from here, in due course.

International Workshop on New Developments of Methods and Software for Protein Crystallography

This workshop is intended to reflect and summarize some important advances of protein crystallography in methodology and automation procedures, such as new ideas and implementations for protein crystallography with emphases on low-resolution phasing and futuristic methods for crystal, nano-crystal or non-crystal structure determination; Automatic, user-friendly pipeline developments; Future data acquisition and storage for structural biology, particularly at modern synchrotron sources. The workshop will also include topics in new methods in protein crystallizations, nano-liter robots, automatic data collection at third generation synchrotrons, new light sources, new detectors, new ideas and ways of diffraction data collection, processing and storage.

17th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy ICCGE-17

August 11-16, 2013Â Warsaw, Poland
The 17th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy (ICCGE-17) will be held in Warsaw, Poland on August 11-16, 2013. The venue will be the main campus of the University of Warsaw established in 1816, which is Poland's largest and finest university. The main campus of the University consists of palatial-style buildings as well as a very modern glass-steel library, with a roof garden. This unique atmosphere will help to make the participation in the conference both comfortable and fruitful. ICCGE-17 will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent research and development activities in all aspects of bulk crystal growth and epitaxial thin film growth, with sessions including fundamentals, experimental and industrial growth processes, characterization and applications. The technical programme will include both oral and poster sessions, as well as plenary and invited talks to provide a complete picture of the latest developments in the field. The official language of the conference will be English. The conference proceedings will be reviewed and published in a special volume of Journal of Crystal Growth.

Meeting Round-up

The 2012 Annual Meeting was held in Boston, Mass., July 28 through August 1. (785) participants presented 258 posters and 294 lectures at the beautiful Westin Waterfront Hotel. Thirty-nine exhibitors participated in the Exhibit Show, beginning with the Opening Reception on Saturday and running through Tuesday evening. Â Attendees traveled from 30 different counties with 23% of the total participants coming from outside the USA. Young scientists (students and post-docs) represented 32% of the total meeting attendance. Â Eleven posters were selected for poster prizes, sponsored by the ACA and seven other groups. Nine students were selected to receive the Margaret C. Etter Student Lecturer Award. Each was invited to give a lecture and was presented with a certificate and monetary award. Â The meeting was financially supported by 33 organizations (scroll down for complete list) whose contributions were used to support young scientists, speakers and social events. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our meeting sponsors whose support sustains the high caliber of our meetings that our attendees have come to expect. Â Marius Krawiec (Vertec Pharmaceuticals) won free membership for 2013 by attending the Business Meeting. Â Winners of the free hotel room raffle were: Â Ming Dong (U. of Delaware), Gary Angles (New Mexico Highlands U.), Annet Bodenheimer (North Carolina State U.), Miguel Garcia-Garibay (U. of California, L.A.), and Bobby Barnett (U. of Cincinnati). REXS 2013 - Workshop on Resonant Elastic X-ray Scattering in Condensed Matter

15-19 July 2013, Oxford, UK

This workshop aims to bring together experts in experimental and theoretical aspects of this vibrant science area, along with researchers who are new to the field, to discuss important recent results and the fundamentals of the techniques.

Building on the success of REXS11 (Aussois) the workshop will include an introduction to techniques, software for data analysis and modelling, the fundamental physics of resonant X-ray scattering and future directions, and its application to a broad range of science. Â The conference will start with a special student day at Diamond, and will provide introductory talks, a description of the terminology used for the meeting, and tutorials on the use of software for data visualization and modelling. Following the Student Day, a welcome reception and early registration will be held at Diamond Light Source with the option to take a tour of the facility. The main conference commences on Tuesday 16th July at the Medical Sciences Teaching Centre in Oxford.
