The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) Commission on High Pressure was establised in 1996 and a series of international workshops were held at the ESRF(97), APS(98), SPring-8(00), and in Orsay(01), Berkeley(03), Saskatoon(04), Dubna(06), Oxford(07), Harbin(09) and Gatlinburg(10). This year, to coincide with the opening of a high-pressure beamline at the spallation neutron source in J-PARC, the meeting will be held in Mito with a tour to J-PARC. It will be organized as a joint meeting of the Commission on High Pressure and the Quantum Beam Science Directorate, Japan Atomic Energy Agency.Scope
This conference will cover the whole range of activities of the IUCr Commission on High Pressure. Contributions in all areas within or closely related to the broad area of high-pressure crystallography will be welcome.

On behalf of the organizing committee of the International Conference on Structural Genomics 2013 â€" Structural Life Science â€" (ICSG2013-SLS), I cordially welcome you to the conference, to be held in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, July 29th â€" August 1st, 2013. ICSG2013-SLS is intended to provide an overview for the most recent developments in Structural Genomics and its impact on research in biology, medicine and disease, and to foster international collaboration among researchers regardless of the borders.Â
The scientific topics covered in ICSG2013-SLS include wider life science research fields with particular attentions to drug discovery (small molecules and biopharmaceuticals), biotechnology and industrial issues while keeping its strength in the highthroughput technologies and integration of hybrid methods. These technologies are now leading to the new field of “Structural Life Scienceâ€.Â
ICSG2-13-SLS is partially supported by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas; “Structural Cell Biologyâ€, “Intrinsically Disordered Protein†and “Transient Macromolecular Complexesâ€, from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).Â
In order to widen the opportunity to young and enthusiastic fellows to study more, we organize several satellite workshops before the ICSG2013- SLS. The topics will include “Small molecule screeningâ€, “Automation of X-ray Structure Determinationâ€, “Cell-free Protein Productionâ€, “ Eukaryote expressionâ€, “Automated NMR methodsâ€, “Interaction analyses" and "Bioinformaticsâ€. We hope you also find the satellite workshops are informative and productive.Â
The conference will be held in Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo, in walking distance to Hokkaido University main campus and Sapporo station. Also the summer in Sapporo is the best season to stay and enjoy the cool summer night of Japan.Â

Sagamore XVII - Great Potentials from Advanced Probes

Sagamore will celebrate the centennial of Max von Laue's discovery of the X-ray diffraction by crystal, and W. H. and W. L. Bragg's demonstration of the crystal structure determination by X-ray in 1913 relating to a major theme of the conference. These groundbreaking experiments mark the birth of modern crystallography. The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) is marking the centennial of these events by declaring 2014 the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr2014). In addition, Sagamore XVII would also like to celebrate the birth of crystallography in Japan by Terada's demonstration of X-ray diffraction (X-Rays and Crystals, T. Terada, Nature, 91, 135-136 (10 April, 1913)) and Nishikawa's report on X-ray patterns of fibrous, lamellar and granular substances (S. Nishikawa and S. Ono, Proc. Tokyo Math-Phys. Soc., II-7, 131-138 (1913)).
Japan and Asia Oceania area has various light source and neutron facilities in addition to electron microscopy which are powerful tools for the charge, spin momentum density study. Therefore, the Role of the Advanced Probes for Next-generation Science on Charge, Spin and Momentum Density will be specially discussed in Sagamore XVII.
The location of Sagamore XVII allows visitors to experience lovely landscapes of Lake Toya, Mt. Ezo-Fuji, Volcanoes, etc. as well as various type of hot-springs. Conference venue and Hotels locate along hot-spring street, forest and mountain stream, where one can explore and enjoy one of Japanese modern hot-spring resorts and natural beauty by foot.

The School of Advanced Studies in Crystallization and Crystallography for Latin America (ECRISLA) sponsored by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) and promoted by the International Organization of Crystal Growth (IOCG) is addressed to graduate students from Brazil and Latin America. These areas of knowledge, crystallization and crystallography are complementary, the event is an important opportunity to deepen their knowledge in an integrated manner. ECRISLA want to create a space for study, discussion and confraternization among teachers, internationally recognized experts, and students. To this end, national and international speakers will address various topics of theoretical and practical methods of crystallization and crystallography studies applied to structure determination of organic compounds and bioinorganic, the crystallization of drugs, materials science and nanotechnology. ECRISLA is structured in two distinct modules: Module 1: Crystallization and Module2: Crystallography. The number of entries for the event will be limited, and partial scholarship can be given to a limited number of students. A Joint Meeting of the Asian Crystallographic Association (AsCA),Â
Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand (SCANZ) and the BRAGG Symposium
November 2012 marks the centenary of the founding of X-ray crystallography by Lawrence Bragg, a field in which he and his father, William, made pre-eminent contributions that were recognised by the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915. William was the Elder Professor of Physics at the University of Adelaide from 1886 to 1909 and Lawrence was born and educated in Adelaide.Â
To celebrate this important anniversary, the legacy of the Braggs' discoveries in X-ray crystallography and the insights that they have provided into the structure of matter, a combined scientific meeting of the Asian Crystallography Association and the Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand is to be held in Adelaide from the 2nd to 5th of December 2012. The Conference will be followed by the Bragg Symposium at the University of Adelaide on the 6th of December 2012 that will explore some of the historical context and personal links to the Braggs' work as well as present some of the broader scientific and social impacts of the Braggs' work. Aperiodic 2012 was the seventh International Conference on Aperiodic Crystals, organized under the auspices of the Commission on Aperiodic Crystals of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). It followed Aperiodic'94 (Les Diablerets), Aperiodic'97 (Alpe d'Huez), Aperiodic'2000 (Nijmegen), Aperiodic'03 (Belo Horizonte), Aperiodic'06 (Zao) and Aperiodic '09 (Liverpool). The next conference in this series will be held in Prague in 2015, organised by Lukas Palatinus and colleagues.

Objectives
- To provide students with the necessary theoretical background and knowledge the most important experimental diffraction X-ray powder including fundamental and advanced aspects.

Mode
The mode of dictation School consist of lectures and practical classes with a total workload of 40 h. Practical classes will include the collection of experimental data and using different analysis programs with free access. The school oriented to students from all over the world and especially, to those from the region where it takes place, has had as objective since the first edition to join the community of crystallographers around a common subject and to promote the postgraduate studies on this field of the sciences. The event has already been recognized as official school of one of the IUCr commissions mentioned before.Â
Increased Synchrotron Light facilities in the world has allowed the access to these facility to a growing number of researchers from different scientific fields. In our geographical region, the Laboratorio Nacional de Luz Sincrotron (LNLS) in Campinas, Brazil has become an alternative to the scientific research in many countries.The possibility of using electromagnetic radiation in a wide range of wavelengths, particularly in the range corresponding to hard and soft X - Rays, using both diffraction and absorption techniques, make this facility a very versatile tool. Â
Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, etc.. are just some examples of different scientific branches which have found in the use of synchrotron light sources the solution for many of their experimental limitations in research.At the last users meeting held at the LNLS in early 2010, it was shown that in addition to Brazil, the countries of the region that make use of this facility is still limited to a very small number, namely, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba and Mexico. From this experience, it is necessary to focus our efforts on increasing the number of scientists in our area that can make use of these tools in their research.Â
We believe that the next school may be an adequate space for specialists in this field in order to transmit the basic operating principles and capabilities of such facilities.Headquarter Ciudad de La Habana

MaThCryst Workshop on Mathematical Crystallography
Manila, 2-6 November 2011Mathematical crystallography in the previous century dealt primarily with the theory of space groups. However, advances in materials science during the past decades have broadened the horizons of mathematical crystallography. Recent works delve into higher-dimensional crystallography, non-Euclidean spaces, and aperiodic structures, and involve a wide array of mathematical tools such as topology, discrete geometry, graph theory, and harmonic analysis. The goal of this workshop was to give a firm introduction on current topics in mathematical crystallography and its applications. In particular, the geometry of periodic and crystalline networks, color symmetry, coincident site lattices, twinning in crystals, mathematical diffraction theory, and crystal GAP shall be discussed. The workshop was intended for young scientists (graduate students and post-doctoral associates) and researchers in mathematics, materials science, structural chemistry, solid state and condensed matter physics. Exposure to research opportunities in mathematical crystallography, a heightened awareness of scientists in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region on the relevance of mathematical crystallography in their respective researches, and collaborations between researchers in mathematical crystallography and experimentalists were among the expected outcomes from this workshop.

Description
Crystal structure prediction has long remained a major unsolved problem in physical sciences [1]. A number of approaches have been formulated over years - most of these are summarized in the recent book [2]. Crystal structure prediction is a powerful tool for designing new materials "in silico", thus replacing the traditional Edisonian trial-and-error approach with design by artificial intelligence. It is also a major instrument for discovering new phenomena at extreme conditions. Crystal structure prediction should thus be an everyday tool at the hands of nearly every computational materials scientist.Â
A major advance in this field happened with the development of the evolutionary algorithm USPEX for crystal structure prediction [3], which has led to a number of important findings [4-6]. This proved to be a very efficient and reliable method, and the USPEX code, based on it and freely distributed to academic scientists, is currently used by over 500 researchers worldwide and this number grows rapidly. We should note that in addition to the evolutionary structure prediction, USPEX code features many other techniques, such as random sampling, metadynamics, minima hopping, particle swarm optimization - all of which can be used in real applications or tested against one another. Thus, familiarity with this code will imply a solid background in other structure prediction techniques. USPEX is the widest used crystal structure prediction code and there is a need to train new users through hands-on tutorials and workshops. One such workshop was organized in Poitiers, France (June 2011) and proved to be a great success. Another workshop will take place in Xi'an, China (August 2011). Through a regular series of such pedagogical events we want to train a new generation of users and developers of crystal structure prediction techniques.Our program will consist of theory lectures, hands-on tutorial sessions, and round table discussions. Morning theory lectures will focus on the nature of the crystal structure prediction problem, various ways to address it (in particular evolutionary algorithms), theory of energy landscapes, applications of crystal structure prediction, problems related to low-dimensional systems. Afternoon tutorials will give each participant to tackle a real research project, and special attention will be paid to the tools for data analysis and visualization.

Fundamentals of Modern Methods of Biocrystallography - BioCrys2012

 This is particularly important due to the rapid development of the field and also due to the fact that many young researchers do not receive a formal education in Crystallography. Additionally, with the introduction of high-throughput methods, the need to understand and grasp the theory behind modern methods will certainly be critical to overcome the difficult problems that will arise and will not be solved by the automated procedures.
Topics of the course will run from fundamentals such as symmetry, point groups and crystal systems, basic diffraction physics, reciprocal space and the Ewalds sphere, radiation damage, data processing, symmetry in the diffraction pattern, structure factors, Patterson function to modern methodologies including molecular replacement, SAD, MAD, MIR and maximum likelihood phasing, direct methods, density modification, refinement, model building, twinning and structure validation. Main challenges on sample preparation and crystallization of proteins will also be covered.
The course will be organized with lectures in the mornings and interactive practicals and tutorials in the afternoons. Evening lectures will address two main important topics within Structural Biology, one covering studies of membrane proteins and the other the beginning of use of free electron lasers in macromolecular Crystallography.
Participants will be limited to 36, aimed primarily at people at the beginning of their crystallographic research activity as PhD students or others. Selected applicants are invited to present a poster during the course.

The Conference will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent research and development activities in fundamental and applied crystallogenesis and mineralogy.
