The conference is organized by V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), L. V. Pisarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chemistry (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and L. M. Litvinenko Institute of Physico-Organic Chemistry and Coal Chemistry (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

The V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, formerly Kharkov State University, has a long-standing tradition in physical chemistry dating back almost 150 years, in which the renowned Russian chemist, Nikolai Beketov (1827-1911), played a pioneering role. As early as 1860, he took the first initiative in a series of lectures entitled "Special Course of Organic Chemistry and Interrelation Between Physical and Chemical Phenomena". Within a few years a decisive milestone was reached when he founded the Physico-Chemical Division of the University in 1864 and delivered the first course of lectures on physical chemistry in 1865.

In a joint effort of the Colombian and Venezuelan Societies of Crystallography, two courses on X Ray Diffraction Techniques are being organized: a course on X ray Powder Diffraction which will take place in Mérida, Venezuela, from June 23 to 27 of 2014, and a course on Single Crystal X Ray Diffraction which will take place in Bucaramanga, Colombia, in September. The participation is open to undergraduate and graduate students and young scientists from academic institutions, as well as professionals from the industrial sector. Students, young researchers, and professionals from other Latin-American countries are most welcome.
The Course on Powder Diffraction integrates the basic principles, common practices, and applications of X ray diffraction techniques for the analysis of polycrystalline samples. Particular attention will be paid at obtaining good experimental data for their appropriate use in different applications.
Three fundamental aspects constitute the core of the powder diffraction course: (1) use of X ray diffraction techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of polycrystalline materials; (2) use of the program GSAS-II (Structure refinement using the Rietveld Method); (3) Microstructure characterization (Use of the program PM2K2). These topics will be presented in the context of conventional X ray diffractometers and of synchrotron radiation.
The Invited Speakers are: Dr. Robert Von Dreele (Argonne National Laboratory, USA), Prof. James A. Kaduk (Illinois Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. Matteo Leoni (Universita degli Studi di Trento, Italy), and Prof. José Antonio Henao (Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia). Professors Asiloé J. Mora, Graciela Díaz de Delgado, Belkis Ramírez, Gerzon Delgado, and Miguel Delgado (ULA, Venezuela) and Dr. Alexander Briceño (IVIC, Venezuela) will also be instructors.

This event is being supported by Universidad de Los Andes (Venezuela), FONACIT (Venezuelan Science Funding Office) and the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD).

Bombannes 2014

The Bombannes summer school is devoted to the practical  «state-of-art» approach to scattering methods, using neutrons, as well as X-ray and light sources - today’s key techniques to study structure and dynamics in systems containing colloids, polymers, surfactants and biological macromolecules. Since 1990 the Bombannes school series introduces, on a fundamental level, the current methodology of static and dynamic scattering techniques and their applicaiton to soft matter systems. It provides with a period of 2 years advanced training for young researchers with a working place in European laboratories at post-graduate and post-doctoral level.

The 13th International Conference on Muon Spin Rotation, Relaxation and Resonance (μSR2014) will be held in Grindelwald, Switzerland, from Sunday, June 1st to Friday, June 6th, 2014. It is organized by the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), the University of Zurich and the University of Fribourg.

The conference provides a forum for researchers from around the world with interests in the applications of μSR to study a wide range of topics including condensed matter physics, materials and molecular sciences, chemistry and biology.

The Conference will consist of invited and contributed talks as well as poster sessions. The proceedings of the μSR2014 conference will be published as a volume in Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS).

Faraday 170: Mechanochemistry: From Functional Solids to Single Molecules

Introduction

Mechanochemical reactions utilise mechanical force to achieve chemical transformation and can be conducted in a number of ways, including grinding/milling processes, sonication or by stretching individual molecules on the tip of an atomic force microscope. Because they can be both solvent-free and less energy consuming than standard solution reactions, mechanochemical transformations are rapidly becoming popular as a sustainable alternative to conventional solution-based and solvothermal chemical processes which are inherently wasteful of solvent and energy in both the laboratory and industry.Â

The growing interest in mechanochemical processes has in the past decade provided exciting developments in the areas of supramolecular (cocrystals, capsules, catenanes, rotaxanes), pharmaceutical (screening new solid drug forms, pharmaceutical cocrystals), materials (porous metal-organic frameworks, luminescent sensors) and organic (solvent-free synthesis, solid-state deracemisation, organic cages) chemistry and catalysis (stereoselective organocatalysts, metalorganic solvent-free catalysis, catalytic solid-state photoreactions). These developments indicate mechanochemistry will play a key role in future clean and sustainable technologies, ranging from "green" synthesis to mineral manufacturing and nanoparticle synthesis.Â

However, such development requires improving the understanding of underlying principles of mechanochemistry and extensive communication between researchers in its different areas (e.g. organic, inorganic, physical, industrial, academic). The 170th Faraday Discussions will facilitate further development of mechanochemistry in terms of applications, definitions and mechanistic understanding, and explore how its innovative, clean and energy-efficient applications could form the basis of new paradigm for academic and industrial chemistry.

Aims

This meeting aims to bring together experts in milling mechanochemistry and sonochemistry, as well as researchers in organic synthesis, metal-organic and inorganic materials chemistry, physical chemists, pharmaceutical scientists and "green" chemistry researchers.Â

Format

The Faraday Division have been organising high impact Faraday Discussions in rapidly developing areas of physical chemistry and its interfaces with other scientific disciplines for over 100 years. Â

Faraday Discussions have a special format where research papers written by the speakers are distributed to all participants before the meeting, and most of the meeting is devoted to discussing the papers. Everyone contributes to the discussion - including presenting their own relevant research. The research papers and a record of the discussion are published in the journal Faraday Discussions.

E-MRS 2014 SPRING MEETINGÂ

As the Clay Minerals Society (CMS) turns its book to a new page to embrace the inquiries, achievements, and services in the next 50 years, the organizing committee of the 51st annual meeting of CMS cordially invites colleagues from diverse disciplines and industries around the world to attend this meeting at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, May 17-21, 2014. The theme of this year's meeting is Everything Is Big, From Nanoparticles To Planets. Yes, clay science is big, not only in Texas but also in every other state and country. It is big to our industry, big to our environment, big to our energy, big to our research, and big to our student training.
The primary purpose of CMS is to stimulate research in all aspects of clay science and technology and to widely disseminate the research findings. Through its conferences and publications, the society offers individuals a means of following the multi-directional growth of the clay sciences and of meeting fellow scientists with widely different backgrounds and interests.
This year's annual meeting will have sixteen technical sessions, a one-day workshop on "Surface modification of clays and nanocomposites", a one-day field trip to clay and lignite mines to learn the mineralogy and geochemical processes in the mines, associated environmental problems, and mine reclamation operations. A half-day local soil tour will follow the meeting. The CMS awards to be presented by the Society include the Marilyn and Sturges W. Bailey Award, the George W. Brindley Lecture, the Marion L. and Chrystie M. Jackson Mid-Career Clay Scientist Award, and the Pioneer in Clay Science Award. The winners of the 7th (2014) Reynolds Cup competition will be announced at the meeting. Awards will also be presented for student research and travel grants, student papers and posters.

The workshop Residual Stress and Texture Analysis by X-ray Diffraction for graduate and doctoral students is organized as satellite event of the 4th Turkey Crystallography Meeting.
Students who will participate in the workshop and the meeting will be able to get support through TUBITAK.

After the first European Symposium which took place in Germany in 2010, the second European Symposium will be organized in France, on the French Riviera, in Giens on May 12-16, 2014. Â The main aim is to highlight new initiatives and future growth opportunities for Ni and Co base superalloys. Specifically, recent advances in the understanding of their performance behaviour and processing which justify their economic integration into an increasing number of industrial systems.
In addition to the usual topics (e.g. mechanical properties, alloy development, in-service degradation…), special attention will be paid to modelling tools which enable the prediction of mechanical behaviour as a function of the processing parameters and the implementation of microstructure-sensitive models to develop higher performing materials through improved engineering processing.

The International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF) is internationally recognized as the premier international conference focused on thin-film deposition, characterization, and advanced surface engineering. It brings together scientists, engineers, and technologists from academia, government laboratories, and industry, thereby merging cutting-edge research with real-world applications. The conference consistently draws more than 700 attendees each year within 37 oral technical sessions and a well-attended poster session.
ICMCTF 2014, will be organized in seven concurrent technical symposia A through G and six topical symposia, addressing experimental, theoretical, and manufacturing issues associated with the development of new coating materials and processes, and evolving approaches to scale-up for commercial applications.
