The conference is organized by V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), L. V. Pisarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chemistry (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and L. M. Litvinenko Institute of Physico-Organic Chemistry and Coal Chemistry (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).
The V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, formerly Kharkov State University, has a long-standing tradition in physical chemistry dating back almost 150 years, in which the renowned Russian chemist, Nikolai Beketov (1827-1911), played a pioneering role. As early as 1860, he took the first initiative in a series of lectures entitled "Special Course of Organic Chemistry and Interrelation Between Physical and Chemical Phenomena". Within a few years a decisive milestone was reached when he founded the Physico-Chemical Division of the University in 1864 and delivered the first course of lectures on physical chemistry in 1865.

The Course on Powder Diffraction integrates the basic principles, common practices, and applications of X ray diffraction techniques for the analysis of polycrystalline samples. Particular attention will be paid at obtaining good experimental data for their appropriate use in different applications.
Three fundamental aspects constitute the core of the powder diffraction course: (1) use of X ray diffraction techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of polycrystalline materials; (2) use of the program GSAS-II (Structure refinement using the Rietveld Method); (3) Microstructure characterization (Use of the program PM2K2). These topics will be presented in the context of conventional X ray diffractometers and of synchrotron radiation.
The Invited Speakers are: Dr. Robert Von Dreele (Argonne National Laboratory, USA), Prof. James A. Kaduk (Illinois Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. Matteo Leoni (Universita degli Studi di Trento, Italy), and Prof. José Antonio Henao (Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia). Professors Asiloé J. Mora, Graciela Díaz de Delgado, Belkis Ramírez, Gerzon Delgado, and Miguel Delgado (ULA, Venezuela) and Dr. Alexander Briceño (IVIC, Venezuela) will also be instructors.
This event is being supported by Universidad de Los Andes (Venezuela), FONACIT (Venezuelan Science Funding Office) and the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD).

We cordially invite you to attend the 1st International Symposium on Halogen Bonding (ISXB-1) which will be held in Porto Cesareo (Lecce, Italy) on 18-22 June 2014.This international symposium will cover all aspects where halogen bonding (XB) plays a role, spanning supramolecular chemistry, materials sciences, and life sciences. In particular, the ISXB-1 will encompass both traditional XB core areas, e.g. crystal engineering and molecular modeling, and less established fields, like, among others, catalysis and polymer chemistry.
The program will comprise plenary and key-note lectures by internationally renowned leaders in the field. Oral communications and posters presentations are also scheduled. Flash communications of selected posters, mainly by students, will be pursued and opportunities are planned for young scientists' networking with both peers and recognized leaders in the field."

Faraday 170: Mechanochemistry: From Functional Solids to Single Molecules
Introduction
Mechanochemical reactions utilise mechanical force to achieve chemical transformation and can be conducted in a number of ways, including grinding/milling processes, sonication or by stretching individual molecules on the tip of an atomic force microscope. Because they can be both solvent-free and less energy consuming than standard solution reactions, mechanochemical transformations are rapidly becoming popular as a sustainable alternative to conventional solution-based and solvothermal chemical processes which are inherently wasteful of solvent and energy in both the laboratory and industry.Â
The growing interest in mechanochemical processes has in the past decade provided exciting developments in the areas of supramolecular (cocrystals, capsules, catenanes, rotaxanes), pharmaceutical (screening new solid drug forms, pharmaceutical cocrystals), materials (porous metal-organic frameworks, luminescent sensors) and organic (solvent-free synthesis, solid-state deracemisation, organic cages) chemistry and catalysis (stereoselective organocatalysts, metalorganic solvent-free catalysis, catalytic solid-state photoreactions). These developments indicate mechanochemistry will play a key role in future clean and sustainable technologies, ranging from "green" synthesis to mineral manufacturing and nanoparticle synthesis.Â
However, such development requires improving the understanding of underlying principles of mechanochemistry and extensive communication between researchers in its different areas (e.g. organic, inorganic, physical, industrial, academic). The 170th Faraday Discussions will facilitate further development of mechanochemistry in terms of applications, definitions and mechanistic understanding, and explore how its innovative, clean and energy-efficient applications could form the basis of new paradigm for academic and industrial chemistry.Aims
This meeting aims to bring together experts in milling mechanochemistry and sonochemistry, as well as researchers in organic synthesis, metal-organic and inorganic materials chemistry, physical chemists, pharmaceutical scientists and "green" chemistry researchers.ÂFormat
The Faraday Division have been organising high impact Faraday Discussions in rapidly developing areas of physical chemistry and its interfaces with other scientific disciplines for over 100 years. Â
Faraday Discussions have a special format where research papers written by the speakers are distributed to all participants before the meeting, and most of the meeting is devoted to discussing the papers. Everyone contributes to the discussion - including presenting their own relevant research. The research papers and a record of the discussion are published in the journal Faraday Discussions.Themes

The primary purpose of CMS is to stimulate research in all aspects of clay science and technology and to widely disseminate the research findings. Through its conferences and publications, the society offers individuals a means of following the multi-directional growth of the clay sciences and of meeting fellow scientists with widely different backgrounds and interests.
This year's annual meeting will have sixteen technical sessions, a one-day workshop on "Surface modification of clays and nanocomposites", a one-day field trip to clay and lignite mines to learn the mineralogy and geochemical processes in the mines, associated environmental problems, and mine reclamation operations. A half-day local soil tour will follow the meeting. The CMS awards to be presented by the Society include the Marilyn and Sturges W. Bailey Award, the George W. Brindley Lecture, the Marion L. and Chrystie M. Jackson Mid-Career Clay Scientist Award, and the Pioneer in Clay Science Award. The winners of the 7th (2014) Reynolds Cup competition will be announced at the meeting. Awards will also be presented for student research and travel grants, student papers and posters.
